Gakona School has the original playground equipment when the school was
built about thirty years ago. The balance beams are broken. The slide
is no longer safe according to OSHA or any other standards. There have
been two broken arms on the slide. I am not entirely sure if
merry-go-a-rounds are allowed in schools anymore. The swing sets are
weathered and old, but acceptable. A wooden fort was built by a mission
group a few years ago, but they did not use all weather wood, so it is
in desperate need of repair. Needless to say, our playground is sad.

The purchase of any new equipment requires following the standards of
landscaping in addition to the purchase of proper equipment. Therefore
the dollar figure is quite extensive. The attached letter was mailed to
several big businesses in addition to local contributors. The final
step will be to rally community support from financial to time and
energy.

There is not a community park or playground and many people use our
current equipment. I hope to find a lot of support. The need is
certainly present and desperate.

This project is extensive and will take the course of several years.
The commitment is huge. Financial and personal support is grand in the
beginning stages, but as a project draws out the commitment and interest
level withers. IT is difficult to maintain the commitment and
enthusiasm. I believe this holds true whenever a large undertaking is
made whether for fun or fiery.

As an administrator, it is necessary to find ways to light the fire
periodically to keep the ball rolling. Consistent encouragement,
appreciation, and vision proves successful.

In compliance with state requirements, each school must complete a
minimum of three traumatic incidents. Each incident must have a pre and
post meeting. As a staff we brain-stormed a couple of location specific
events. Included as Artifact 3.2 is a copy of the chart.

What we found completing these scenarios is that we generated various
other scenarios and discussed how we would handle them. We also
discussed some ways to be more prepared in situations when there may be
a substitute. In a single teacher school with one teaching assistant,
it presented some unique concerns.

Although we can't create the traumatic incident we encounter,
preparedness is the key. Regardless of whether one is in a single
teacher site or 100 teachers, it is imperative to always be prepared
with a game plan for specific natural and human emergency situations.
Once students and staff have practiced various situations specific
events, they will be more prepared to handle a real situation if it were
to occur.
