All student testing data is maintained in student cumulative files.
Each year schools receive group statistics and information, however
there is not any cumulative information or representation of individual
students as they progress through the years. As the lead teacher, and
some years the only teacher at Gakona School, I felt that information
was extremely valuable and personally reflective. The basic areas of
reading, writing, and mathematics have been targeted and graphed to
reflect each child's entire school testing results. Additional
information which will be added later will include attendance for those
years, participation in any special education program/programs, and
transiency data.

I was very humbled by the results. Ninety percent of the students made
a 20% gain over the course of three years. There can always be
improvement, but I am proud of each and everyone of them. The ladder is
continuously raised to meet higher expectations.

Longitudinal data and portfolios are so valuable to observed the
positive and negative aspects of student performance. Establishing even
a simple representation to follow each child along through the years is
quite reflective. Such reflection identifies, clarifies, and addresses
some barriers to achieving school vision...all children will be
successful.

As an administrator, I view it imperative to either purchase or develop
a system of reflecting longitudinal student data, class data, and school
data. Self analysis will allow staff to identify specific standards
which may need more attention. Although I believe in allowing all
teachers to work with a system they are comfortable with and works for
them, I also feel it is necessary to have a school or even district-wide
system for maintaining specific data. This would allow students to pass
from class to class or school to school and teachers/administrators can
readily identify strengths and learning needs.

Gakona School is a K-8 building. This year there are students in
grades K-6 only. Even so, there are seven preps for each subject area
daily. There are many multi-grade activities and projects, however each
student and grade level have different goals and objects. The task can
seem mind boggling without organization and preparation. I contributed
a significant amount of time prior to school and during the first few
weekends to yearly plans. Artifact 2.2 denotes only a single sample
page. The document itself is over 50 pages long. AK standards are met
and identified in each of the areas.

The intended results are to ensure every grade level and every child
has met or exceeded Alaska Standards and personal goals. There are
always surprises. Most areas are always over planned for, however we
have done a pretty good job of keeping on schedule.

I may not expect staff members to go to the extent I have reached,
however it is extremely valuable and important to set goals, objectives,
and timelines to ensure all students receive a quality education.
