Students are unable to learn without proper health and nutrition. We
must meet the lower spectrum of Maslow's Heirachy in order to reach the
higher levels. Healthy lifestyles and eating choices are an integrated
part of every student's day at Gakona School. However barriers exist
for the children at Gakona School. It is not practical or economical to
sustain an official breakfast or lunch program at Gakona School as exist
at the larger schools of Kenny Lake and Glennallen.

There are some limitations in reference to parent education as well as
financial capability to providing students with adequate lunches and
breakfast. A solution had to be discovered. I did not want to drain
the Activity Fund to support a nutrition program, so I wrote a letter of
request to businesses that have a vested interest in our area. We have
received funding from Well's Fargo Bank and Alyeska at this point. This
allows for the purchase of fruit, yogurt, milk, cereal, etc. Each
student begins his/her day with a healthy breakfast. If there is any
money left from the purchases of food items, it will be applied to
supporting the outdoor exercise program which we have developed which
includes cross-country skiing for every student and hopefully this year
ice skates. The artifact attached is a very nice letter of support from
Alyeska.

I think we all find in life, most of us function on the bottom level of
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs most of the time. Basic physical needs must
be met to move above the levels. It is an awesome and sometimes
impossible responsibility for an administrator to make sure everyone is
happy. It is important to do the best you can, treat everyone fair and
equitably treatment, and perform the duties of your profession with the
utmost limits of integrity and honesty.

A significant amount of fund raising is completed each year from annual
raffle to specific letters to contributing businesses. In connection
with the school breakfast program, I also felt outdoor exercise was
important. With substantial donations and fund raising, we purchased a
set of cross-country skis for every student in the school with extras in
various size ranges to account for new students and growth.

Students make and break trails for their ski activities. A recent copy
of the school plat was obtained. We would like to create a community
ski trail with trail markers.

Future thoughts also include plans to explore the possibility of older
students re-breaking and following some traditional Ahtna trails near
the Gakona and Gulkana Rivers.

This project has met physical as well as personal and cultural needs.
We have gain community support and enthusiasm.

Most recently we expanded our efforts with the purchase of ice skates
for all students. Although the transaction is not complete, it looks
like we will have helmet donations from a large business. The next plan
is to repair the rink. I hope to encourage community members to buy a
panel. With their purchase, the boards will be repaired and they can
either tailor their own art design with signature or it will be
completed for them.

Keeping mind and body active is necessary for personal, social, and
academic growth. Program, such as these not only accomplish that goal,
but also include the community within the school. The school does belong
to the community.
