It's always a pleasure to see a person for the first
time experience reeling a halibut up from the depths of the Inlet. When
that young person comes all the way from the Lower 48 to experience that
thrill, well, it makes the event more special. The halibut catches get
bigger as the fish make their seasonal migration. The season ranges from
May through September. We look forward to making your halibut trip an unforgettable
adventure.
Our halibut trips begin at 7 AM when we leave the Homer harbor.
After a brief safety orientation, we may stop outside the harbor to jig
some cod before heading for the halibut grounds. Once during the 1997 season,
we caught a 37# king salmon while fishing for bait! Depending on the tide,
we'll run one to one and a half hours where we'll alternately anchor and
drift a variety of spots. Some anglers prefer to target the average sized
ahlibut (20-40#) and enjoy the action this provides, while others have
a "barndoor" in mind. These large fish can literally bring grown
adults to their knees . It can take a full day to recover from the battle.
The limit is two halibut per person and you must hook your own fish. Our
job is to coach you and help you accomplish this goal. The reward is many
fine meals of boneless white halibut filets. Upon arriving back at the
dock about 5 PM, we'll hang and photograph your catch, then filet the fish
free of charge.
