How
do I anonymous FTP through the InterJet II?
How
do I set up my FTP server on the InterJet?
How
do I set up my FTP client on the InterJet?
Answer:
Windows/Win95
or NT
FTP stands for
File Transfer Protocol, which allows a user on one host to access,
and transfer files to and from, another host over a network. FTP is
also the name of the program (or client) that you run to perform FTP.
Most FTP clients you run from your home computer (via ppp) are similar
to the Windows File Manager, in that you have two windows. One window
reflects your home computer and the other displays the host computer
directories. Once you have specified and connected to the host computer,
all you do is click and drag the files to start the transfer. When
connecting to an anonymous FTP site, use the login username of "anonymous"
and your e-mail address for a password. One of the best Windows/Win95
client programs to use is "WS-Ftp"; point and click and the file is
saved to your hard drive.
MS-DOS Prompt

How to use it
- Open a MS-DOS
prompt window and at the c:\> prompt type: "ftp" (this will produce
a ftp> prompt)
C:\> ftp

Commands you
will need to make it work: Most files are kept under the public
directory, but others may be kept in specific directories. Check
with the network administrator to find out specifically where you
have access.
- Some typical
commands that you can use while in the ftp> prompt.
- To look at
directories use the "ls" command. Some systems will accept a "dir"
command like MS-DOS.
- To move around
between directories type "cd directoryname".
- To back up
a directory type "cd .."
- To find out
where you are type "pwd" and it will show you the directory that
you are in.
- To get files
at the remote ftp site, type "bin" for binary mode of operation.
Then type "get filename.ext" which is the file name on that end.
- When Your
session is done just type "close" the will bring you back to the
Whistle ftp prompt.
- To close
the ftp session type "bye"

When
using an FTP client to connect to a site, the connection either times
out or the listing shows no contents in the root directory. I know
I have access and there are files there. What causes this problem?
Answer:
Configure your
FTP client to support "passive transfers". MS DOS FTP capabilities
do not support Passive FTP. However, most commercially available FTP
clients (such as WS-FTP) do support passive FTP. To
configure an FTP client to support passive transfers, consult the
documentation that has been provided by the manufacturer.
Note: If traffic
will be going through a firewall it is recommended that you use Passive
FTP.

How
do I transfer my domain name to IBM?
Answer:
Domain names are
administered by Network Solutions. To transfer a domain name from
your existing web-hosting service to IBM requires that your domain
name entry in the Internet's Domain Name Service (DNS) points to IBM's
name servers. You can do this yourself, but your Technical Coordinator
(TC) will be happy to do this for you and can make sure the transfer
takes place with minimum disruption to your business. To allow your
TC to perform this task, please provide him or her with a letter,
which must be on your company letterhead, signed, and dated, containing
the following text:
To Whom it May
Concern,
I, (your name),
am giving my authorization for modification of the following domain:
(your domain
name e.g. mydomain.com)
Please process
this request as soon as possible. Thank you,
Your TC will send
this letter, along with the other necessary documentation, to Network
Solutions to request them to switch your domain over to your new InterJet
system. Delaying the submission until your InterJet arrives ensures
that any disruption in service is kept to a minimum. At some point
during the transfer, your old services will become unavailable and
the new location of your domain will propagate across the Internet.
The process of completely transferring your domain takes between 24
and 48 hours once the submission has been accepted by Network Solutions.
You can check the status of the transfer using the Network Solutions
WHOIS database (available at http://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois).
Just enter your domain name and click Search. For each matching domain
you will be given information about the owner of the domain name and
the domain servers registered for it. IBM's servers are ns1.iwebconn.net
and ns2.iwebconn.net. When these servers appear in your domain's record,
it has been successfully transferred.

How
do I set up a Windows NT workstation?
Answer:
- From the desktop,
right click on "Network Neighborhood"
- Select "properties,
protocols, TCP/IP, and properties."
- Select the
Ethernet adapter for this PC.
- Select "obtain
an IP address from a DHCP server" then click OK.
Note: If you
have a static IP address configured and the "obtain an IP address
from a DHCP server" is grayed out, then your machine is a DHCP
server. If this is the case on your network, and your InterJet
is also configured as a DHCP server, then you will have addressing
conflicts on your network. You will need to either turn off the
InterJet's DHCP capabilities, or the NT server's DHCP program.
When you statically
configure any computer's IP information, you must configure an
IP address from the same subnet as that which is assigned to the
InterJet's office LAN port. If you're not an experienced Windows
NT server administrator, you should obtain technical assistance
in configuring the NT server to work properly with the InterJet

What
is a line config error when autoconfiguration is running?
Answer:
A line config
error means that somewhere within the download script, a parameter
is incorrectly configured, for example, if the site is supposed to
be configured for ISDN and there are no line numbers or SPID numbers
specified, then a line config error will be produced. To see the error
and determine the path to fix the problem, you have to first log into
Commander.
After logging
into Commander, do the following:
Select the company
by highlighting it but do not go into "edit" mode. Select the
"View Config Output" box from the list of boxes on right side From
the config output listing, look for the line number that is having
the problem. I.e., if the error from the LCD of the InterJet is "config
error line 53" from the config script page, go to line 53. Go
back into Commander and check the parameter in question and correct
it.

How
do I do remote email retrieval with Eudora?
Answer:
- From the InterJet's
user interface, go to Mail Agent and select "options."
- Deselect the
check mark in the box labeled "disable remote access to InterJet
mailboxes."
Next you must
configure Eudora to retrieve email from the InterJet.

I've
just completed with the setup and I can't ping any external
IP addresses.
Answer:
InterJet
Setup
A few
things to check:
- Can you ping
your WAN IP address?
If "no" check
to make sure your configuration is correct and your default gateway
is configured so the workstation points to the LAN IP for the InterJet
- Can you ping
your default WAN gateway IP address? If "no" check the following:
- RJ45 cable
if connected to integrated router
- V.35 cable
if connected to CSU/DSU
- hubs to
make sure all are working
- Can you ping
your LAN IP address assigned to the InterJet?
Try connecting
directly to the InterJet with the orange loopback cable. This is
connected from the workstation's Ethernet port to the InterJet's
Office net port. If you still cannot ping the InterJet's LAN IP,
check the orange cable to make sure it's good.
- Are you using
an integrated router or a CSU/DSU?
- If you are
using an integrated router, are you using a straight through cable
to connect from the router to the InterJet?
Do not use the
provided orange cable. Use either the blue or yellow cable or any
other standard straight-through cable.
- If you are
using an integrated router, are all the lights on the router green?
Check with the
manufacturer to find which LEDs are supposed to be green or orange
or red. Is there a self-test that can be done to the router to make
sure it is working correctly? Check with manufacturer for this test
if any.
- If you are
using a CSU/DSU are you using a confirmed working V.35 cable?
A V.35 is a
special cable and should be provided either by IBM or the manufacturer
for the CSU/DSU. Verify with the CSU/DSU manufacturer that the cable
is a supported one.
- Can your ISP
connect to your gateway?
If "no" then
ask the ISP to check the integrated router or CSU/DSU for to see
that it's functioning properly.

The InterJet is provided with multiple
Ethernet cables to be used with a Local Area Network client or hub.
Which one is the correct cable?
- Use the blue Ethernet cable to connect
the InterJet's Office Ethernet port to a port (not the uplink port)
on an Ethernet hub, which is in turn connected to computers on your
LAN.
- Use the orange Ethernet cable to connect
the InterJet's Office Ethernet port to a single client computer.
You may also use an Ethernet straight-through
cable to connect the InterJet to your hub.

My
InterJet connects to the Internet over a dial-up connection (using a
modem or ISDN link). How can I avoid excessive connection charges?
Answer:
Telephone company
charges for connection to the Internet depend on a number of factors.
Two of these that are under your control are the number dialed and the
amount of time you are connected. To minimize your charges, take the
following steps:
- Make sure that
the number dialed is in your local calling area.
- Ensure that your
schedule settings do not cause the line to be continually active -
this is particularly important for ISDN connections. For example,
the default schedule is as follows:
- Check for
received mail once an hour.
- Send outgoing
mail once an hour.
- Disconnect
after 5 minutes of inactivity.
You must take care to avoid an incorrect setting of the third item in
this list. If the disconnect after inactivity time is greater than either
of the other two items, the link will never be inactive long enough
to allow the link to be disconnected. This will result in a continuous
connection, which can be particularly expensive if you are using an
ISDN link.
