WHITEWATER

Upper Upper Willow Creek

This Creek is currently considered the most technically difficult Class V creek in these hills.  It is unmatched in beauty and potential danger.  There is an undercut around every bend and the most significant rapid on the run has a class VI portage if you decide the drop is a little too hairball.  Don't get me wrong, if you are ready for this type of river you will not forget it soon.  The put in is a 90 minute drive north of Anchorage and is fully described in Embick's guide.

Kings, The Magic Mile

This is one I have not yet completed.  After spending some time stuffed under a midriver undercut rock in the first serious rapid, I decided to take the trail on river left.  By all accounts this is a class V gem.  Two hours from Anchorage, this river requires either a long hike or four-wheel and hike in. The lower run is also a class III-IV beaut that is unmatched in scenic grandeur.  If you make it up to Alaska be sure to seriously consider this run.  Embick does a nice job of  describing what it takes.

Sixmile Creek

This river is like anyone's most reliable friend.  It runs almost all year.  Yes, January runs have been done.  A class III-V run, this is a playground for the experienced boater.  90 minutes south of Anchortown this is where most of the experienced boaters start their season and with Canyon, Walker, and Ingram close by this run is a great back-up run if you want to wear yourself out playing your ass off.  Best of all its roadside.
