Certified Public Manager Program

Sponsored by University of Alaska, State of Alaska, and Alaska Municipal League

What is the CPM?

The purpose of the CPM is to teach the practical skills necessary to be a successful manager. Years ago the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Program was created to set standards for the basic education of accountants. Now the CPA designation is universally recognized as the standard for excellence in accounting. The Certified Public Manager (CPM) is designed around a similar concept.

Where is the CPM recognized?

The following states are Accredited or Active members of the National CPM Consortium: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin, and Ohio. Alaska's CPM Program was granted full accreditation in December of 1997. The State of Alaska now recognizes the CPM when selecting managers and the CPM is also given academic credit toward the MPA degree by the University of Alaska.

What can you learn at a CPM Seminar?

The CPM program focuses on practical management skills, taught primarily through example and group exercises. Therefore, seminars are limited to 20 participants. One or two-day seminars include: individual and group communications for managers, supervision and personnel skills for managers, leadership, decision making and problem solving techniques, budgeting and financial management, how to research issues, ethics for managers, and other practical management techniques to form a comprehensive and integrated practical management program.

If you choose not to complete the full CPM curriculum, you may take individual seminars to strengthen your management skills.

How does CPM differ from "management" seminars offered by Lower 48 companies?

First, the CPM is primarily taught by successful Alaskan managers, consultants and professors who share skills they use daily. Second, seminars utilize Alaskan examples and information particularly valuable to Alaskan managers. Third, each CPM seminar is designed as part of a comprehensive and integrated educational package for managers.

How much does a CPM Seminar cost?

A CPM Seminar costs $90 per day of seminar per student ($105 per day for Level I seminars offered by the state’s Alaska Professional Development Institute).

Newly Elected Officials Seminar

Your decision to serve as a mayor or council/assembly member gives you a crucial role in determining the future of your community and your state. Many of your biggest challenges will be dealing with State and Federal laws, regulations, programs, and mandates. The Alaska Municipal League's (AML's) primary job is to give municipalities a more effective unified voice in state and federal decision making.

The two-day Newly Elected Officials (NEO) Seminar is offered every year prior to the annual Local Government Conference (usually the second week of November). Some of the issues covered in this important training program are:

Leadership Institute

As part of the Annual Local Government Conference, delegates are invited to participate in the Leadership Institute. Participants receive a Certificate of Completion for attending a required number of workshops that focus on improving leadership skills. Details and registration forms are distributed each year to member municipalities.

Legislative Conference

Every spring the Alaska Municipal League holds a Legislative Conference in Juneau. This gathering of municipal officials is important to let the legislature hear a united voice. Attendees receive special training in lobbying techniques, as well as opportunities to discuss key municipal issues with colleagues. Details and registration forms are sent to municipal members.
