Uphill
Skiing uphill works best with skate skis. It is difficult with alpine skis and almost impossible with a snowboard.
Which technique you use depends on the steepness of the hill, the snow conditions and how tired you are.
    • Side Step-- Used for short steep uphills such as up a snowberm beside a parking lot. Often used by alpine skiiers. Slow
    • Traverse and Kick-Turn--Good for going uphill in loose snow. Not useful on packed track.
    • Herring Bone- Use on steep uphills faster than side step.
    • Striding Uphill-Must use kick wax or else "waxless" skis. Use on mild uphills. Fast
    • Diagonal Skate-faster than herring bone. Requires packed snow.
    • Skating Uphill-The fastest but must be done at a running pace and requires packed snow.
