The Benefits
The Secure Remote Access feature enables
your remote employees to access your company's internal network from
a remote location, using computers running either Windows® 95 or
98, or Mac® OS. The InterJet¨ firewall helps to protect
remote computers as though they were clients on your internal office
network.
Using this feature, up to ten remote employees
can simultaneously log in to the InterJet and access your office network.
System and Network
Requirements
Requirements for your remote employees'
computers:
- Windows 95 or 98, or Mac OS version
7.1 or later (version 7.5 or later recommended)
- A modem (minimum 33.6K)
- An individual dial-up account with an
Internet Service Provider (ISP)
- PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling protocol)
client software.
PPTP client software can be acquired
in the following way:
- For Windows computers, you can use
the Microsoft VPN Adapter that Windows 98 includes and is available
free for Windows 95. To obtain the VPN adapter for Windows 95,
download the Microsoft Dial-up Networking Upgrade, version 1.3
or later, from the Microsoft Web site. Download for Windows 95
can be found at the following address: www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/default.asp
- For Macintosh computers, you will
need to acquire third-party PPTP client software. We recommend
TunnelBuilderú from Network TeleSystems, Inc. (NTS).
For more information about TunnelBuilder, visit the NTS Web site
at: http://www.nts.com/products/vpntnnlbldr.html
Requirements for your network servers
In order to be accessible to remote employees, servers on your network
must be running IP (Internet Protocol). Such servers include Novell
NetWare 5 and Windows NT. Remote employees cannot access non-IP servers,
such as those running AppleTalk or IPX.
How This Feature Works
The Secure Remote Access feature transfers data between your network
and a remote computer, using the Microsoft Point-to-Point Tunneling
Protocol (PPTP) to create a "tunnel" through the Internet. To help protect
confidential data, Secure Remote Access encrypts all data before sending
it through the tunnel, and then decrypts data once it is behind the
InterJet firewall.
To use Secure Remote Access, remote employees
simply connect to the Internet using their own dial-up ISP account,
then connect to the InterJet VPN (virtual private network) server using
PPTP client software installed on their computer. Remote employees can
then log in to the InterJet and access all network resources that are
running IP (Internet Protocol)-including servers and applications that
reside on them-as though they were at the office. The following figure
illustrates how Secure Remote Access works.

Limitations of Secure Remote Access
Access to network resources is limited for remote employees using Macintosh&174;
computers. This is because Secure Remote Access is not compatible with
AppleTalk&174;, therefore remote employees cannot use the Mac OS Chooser
to access the InterJet or any other servers and computers on your network.
However, remote employees using Macintosh computers can still retrieve
e-mail messages, browse your internal Web site, and use an FTP client
program to access files on the InterJet.
To allow remote employees to access any
servers on your network that are running Novell NetWare&174;, you must
configure these server to run standard IP (Internet Protocol) rather
than IPX.
