The InterJet in Japan

Whistle did not sell direct in Japan. From 1998 NTT and Ricoh sold the InterJet to small businesses, NTT's bundle adding an NEC ISDN terminal adapter and a hub. About 400 Japanese companies had one by October 1998, when Whistle opened a Japan branch [1]. The InterJet II went on sale in Japan in July 1999 [3], and NTT-ME sold it as the "InterJet Pack" with a router, a hub, an OCN connection and support, in ten prefectures around Tokyo [2].

Jeremy Allison, a former Whistle engineer, wrote in 2005 that IBM wanted Whistle partly because the InterJet had done tolerably well in Japan, where NTT supported it [5].

The WhistleWare releases recovered here (3.0.3 and the 3.2.1 line) carry a Japanese interface: front-panel text in Shift-JIS, Japanese release notes and configuration pages, and twelve spoken Japanese prompts, the only speech WhistleWare shipped. Ricoh had its own build, 3.2.1p15-ricoh (April 2000), which survives.

If you have a Japanese-market unit, its disk or its papers, please contact me. Image the disk first: take it out of the unit and image it with ddrescue before powering the unit on. More on the main page.

音声ガイダンス / Voice prompts

The Japanese version of WhistleWare came with twelve spoken prompts that walk the user through initial setup: how to begin, the front-panel keys, a mistyped phone number or registration ID, and the end of setup, plus a few for errors and shutdown. The English version has no speech. Each prompt is here as Whistle's own .au and as a .wav, with its Japanese transcript and an English translation.

Files are sound-ja_JP-vox-name.au: 8-bit mu-law, 22050 Hz, mono. The .wav copies are 16-bit PCM.

注 / Notes

  1. congratulations1 opens with お疲れ様でした, a set phrase acknowledging that the listener has finished a task. English has no direct equivalent. Candidates: "All done.", "Congratulations.", or omitting it, since the next sentence already announces completion.
  2. If the 24-digit activation code on the setup sheet is the same thing as the registration ID number, the English prompt should use whatever name is printed on the English setup sheet.
  3. The Japanese transcripts are from OpenAI's Whisper speech recognition model, size large-v3, and have not yet been checked against the audio by a native speaker. The first-round machine translation is from Whisper medium.
