Fun in the Sun - The August Pas15 Aug 98, Barony of Eskalya
Sponsored by:Princess Sir Richenza Organized by:Viscount Sir Georg Description:An informal Pas, storied as described in the Background Handout. How it Went:Every one had a good time. The combatants were Prince Joseph, Baron Tancred, Baron Alfonso, Master Patrick Logan, and Lord Ian. Viscount Sir Georg initially marshaled and then fought. Viscountess Viresse marshaled through out (sidelined with a twisted ankle). Mistress Cedrin kept a log which listed, as best could be done, the gist of each persons introduction, who meet in combat, how each combat went, and when/why ribbons were presented by the gallery. This is still being transcribed but is expected to be a beautiful and much appreciated period-style addition to these pages. One of the more unusual challenges was a armored foot race. Originally this was to be between Baron Alfonso and whichever other combatant choose to meet him. As it happened, all the original combatants raced. In a very close (and very loud) 40 yard race, Prince Joseph won by a half-pace. After the initial rounds of combat, the Gallery selected combatants and methods of combat. Princess Richenza acted as the Gallery's advisor and a number of additional combats were done to the Gallery's pleasure.
All in all, this was a good example of how informal and easy a period-style tournament can be. Lessons Learned:Don't forget the camera. Mistress Cedrin's chronicle is a far rarer work, but some pictures would still have been nice. Finding a pace that suits both the gallery and the fighters remains a challenge, although there were no major complaints. Still, as an ongoing issue, one of the major goals of Argent Bear is to work on solutions. It's worth noting that often the Gallery can be harder on the fighters than the fighters are on themselves. Having an experienced fighter or marshal as their advisor (Knight/Squire/Lady of Honor) seems to be the best way to keep everything reasonable. In this case, the combats were hard but very much in line.
