Description:

A three part challenge set up for a Sunday morning, the second day of a coronet tournament. Challenges were accepted to honor the Queen of the West, the Princesses of Oertha, and the Baroness of Eskalya. A shield was hung for each of the defenders and tokens were given to all who contested.

How it Went:

One would typically expect a low turnout for an early morning challenge on the second day of an event. In some measure that's the point of setting an early start: to see who will arise for the occasion. Compounding the early time, however, were the heavy rains of the previous night. That meant most people had not slept well or much and a few had abandoned the camp altogether for the night.

The morning of the challenge, we set up a table and some chairs under one of the pavilions and hosted anyone who cared to visit (coffee and breakfast was already being provided nearby). A number of people who did not fight or were not fighters stopped by and visited. The idea of period challenges and non-tourney combat received a fair bit of discussion.

Sir Richenza did combat for the Queen's shield. Turn out was very light - three people struck a shield for combat. Notably, Gyer the Silent answered all three challenges.

Lessons Learned:

Overall the activity received excellent visibility - if not a lot of combat - and the participants considered their obligations well fulfilled.

For its time, place and purpose, we consider it a success.
