The Copper River School District has an existing Crisis Plan that
addresses all emergencies and procedures to follow. However there are many situations that are site specific. Furthermore people, locations, and other instructions may change from year to year. The document must be revised annually to include site specific information. Most crisis situations include a variety of community individuals, locations, and supports. To consider all factors the Crisis Plan will be discussed at the Kenny Lake Staff Meeting and the Kenny Lake PTA meeting. Furthermore, calls will be made to key players to ensure their continued support/participation. Finally site specific information will be imputed into the document.
The intended outcome is staff, students, and community members are well trained to act appropriately and safely in the event of any emergency. Emergencies and accidents by sheer nature are always a surprise and may not fall neatly into any of the rehearsed categories or scenarios, however awareness and practice allows all to be better prepared.
Being prepared and considering possible situations and emergencies will allow one to exercise efficiency and good judgement should an event arise. It is most important in situations, such as Kenny Lake, when the nearest law enforcement agency and emergency medical facility is 45 miles away.

Effective communication skills are used
A safe, clean, and aesthetically pleasing school environment is created and maintained
There are six teachers, three aides, an administrator, and parent
volunteers involved in recess supervision. Students were receiving
mixed messages from different adults. Occasional disrespect and minor injuries became the result. Two issues had to be address: 1. Set of uniform rules, and 2. Scheduling of activities. I created a draft
document of each, sent an e mail to all involved, and requested input. After considering all preferences and suggestions, another draft document of each was sent with a request for approval. The process continued for several rounds until everyone had something they could live with.
The result was better conformity, however there are always exceptions and new issues that arise. An example was break-up presented a whole new picture with water and puddle boots... "Can they go in water as long as they have puddle boots? Is there no water at all?" Easy solution was no water was something all the adults could live with and a sign was posted at each door stating "STAY OUT OF THE WATER." Flexibility and good adult communication is necessary to give students consistent
messages. I think the role of the principal is to make sure consistency and fairness is occurring. It is quite possible and probable for teachers and assistants to complete the same activity, but when it doesn't happen I think it is important for the principal to take or assign that role to ensure the safety and equitable treatment of all.
