All About the Whistle InterJet

Software: known versions

Original WhistleWare software versions: those we have recovered, and those we know or infer existed but do not have.

There is an A/B partition upgrade scheme -- a unit may hold two different versions at once.

Each release was distributed as an IDEA-encrypted file; all of the encryption keys are now known, so every release marked available can be decrypted. The Status column: missing (known to have existed but not held; the Comment column says how we know: a unit's own upgrade log, an upgrade from it on Whistle's server, or Whistle's own text), inferred (named nowhere we have found, but implied by the patch levels on either side of it), encrypted (held but no key -- none at present), or available (held and openable, whether as a decryptable upgrade archive or a full installed disk image).

The "Released" column is the month from each release's own official Whistle release notes. The "changelog" link is Whistle's own release notes. Each release's directory under whistleware-releases/ also has a list of that release's files. Where release notes aren't available, highlights are derived from a comparison of files.

WhistleWare 1.x to 3.x (Whistle Communications, 1996-2000)

Runs on the original InterJet, not the InterJet II (no kernel has the PCI network or chipset drivers)

WhistleWare II, 4.x (Whistle/IBM, 1999-2001)

Shipped on the InterJet II. Every 4.x kernel also includes the original InterJet's drivers, and we have one record of 4.2p2 running on a first-gen InterJet (Julian Elischer's dmesg). No evidence of Whistle offering an upgrade from 3.x to 4.x4.x is also missing the driver for the first-gen InterJet's Digi ISDN card.
