"Vibroblade" is the generic term applied to any powered cutting blade, ranging from tiny vibroshivs to sword blades that can be up to a meter long. As with the vibro-ax, these weapons use small ultrasonic generators to produce thousands of microscopic vibrations per second along the blade's edge, greatly improving the ability to slice through dense materials. Originally developed for industrial uses, vibroblades are used in factories and are carried in the field by scouts, mechanics, and other laborers. Medical applications are numerous, since vibroscalpels allow for very precise, effortless incisions.

Almost inevitably, this technology was applied to warfare, leading to the development of exceptionally dangerous habd weapons. Whereas an unpoered blade may simply cause lacerations, even a glancing blow with a vibroblade can cut off a limb or cause other very serious injuries. Vibroblades are so powerful and inexpensive that they have all but replaced unpowered blades on many worlds.

The Merr-Sonn Treppus-2 is a standard kinfe-sized vibroweapon with a blade nearly fifteen centimeters long. The power cell (located in the handgrip) supplies energy for up to ten hours, while the sheath can include an optional automatic recharging unit.

Pressing the activation stud powers up the weapon, although the blade can be preset to activate as soon as it is pulled from its sheath. When powered, the blade vibrates so quickly that it seems to blur, while the low hum of the vibration generator can be heardfrom several meters away. The blade effortlessly cuts through duraplast, ceramic armor, and metal allows. The handgrip's padding absorbs excess vibration, resulting in a weapon that is extremely easy to wield. Its excellent weight distribution allows it to be thrown with great accuracy.

The Czerka vibroknuckler is a small self-defense weapon designed for someone who's accustomed to brawling with bare fists. Once it is slipped over the fngers, the knuckler's cutting blade activates as soon as the wielder clenches his or her hand into a fist. While the knuckler has a very short blade, it is alwost imposible for unarmed opponents to block its blows.

Vibroblades are openly carried by New Republic commandos and other soldiers as backup weapons. In lawless locales such as Moc Eisley spaceport, vibroblades are openly both to intimidate and to ward off potential attackers. On worlds with strict prohibitions against weapons, many street thugs carry small, easily concealed vibroshivs, which generally ahve blades less than six centimeters long but are still quite deadly in close-quarters combat.

During his early days as a smuggler Han Solo had a close call with a thug wielding a vibroblade. With no means of retreat or escape, Solo had to rely on his most potent weapon: his wits. The Corellian smuggler momentarily distrackted the attacker, allowing Solo's associate, Fiolla of Lord, to run over a thug with a swoop.
