Daily Requirements: Always bring a willingness to learn and explore, notebook, journal, and pen or pencil.
Make-up work: It is the student's responsibility to find out and make up any work missed due to an excused absence. (Work missed due to an unexcused absence cannot be made up). Missed tests and quizzes must be made up outside of class time. The student has one day for every day missed to make-up work.
Course Requirements: Reading and writing on a regular basis. Library investigation, magazine or newspaper critiques, current events, lecture notes, semester project, presentations, papers, tests, quizzes, and more!
Essays and Writing Workbook: A class workbook is required. It must be a separate spiral . We will be using this workbook to create a "story" of the different areas of Asia. A reaction log of the many different reading assignments we will read will be kept in this book along with a map and a timeline assignment to complete the picture of the history and culture of Asia as we study it. I will not be collecting this workbook everyday. I will usually collect it on a Friday in order to use the weekend to grade it. It is important that you do not miss entries in this workbook as it will be a major part of your grade.
Other policies: A. Cheating will not be tolerated. Cheating is not only copying someone elses work it is allowing them to copy that work. "Helping" your friend will be considered cheating. ALWAYS do your own work unless otherwise noted by the teacher.
B. Common courtesy and good classroom behavior is expected from all.
C. Students must be able to separate knowledge from belief. An open-minded ability to learn about other cultures, mythologies, and religions related to this course without having ones private belief system threatened is essential. Specifically, this course will require an understanding of Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Shintoism, Islam and many cultural practices and mores associated with Asia, regardless of what your personal beliefs are.
Extra credit: I do not expect my students to do anything extra for this course.
Late work: I will accept a late assignment up to one week after it is due for half credit. One week is the equivalent of five days after the assignment is due. After one week I will not accept late work.
Tardy Policy: I do not give "free" tardies. Consequences for tardiness are as follows:
1st Tardy: 10 minute detention in my room at lunch.
2nd Tardy: Clean all of my tables.
3rd Tardy: Clean all of my tables and my board.
4th Tardy: Clean all of my tables, board and windows.
5th Tardy: Clean all tables, board, windows, and scrape gum off bottom of tables.
I have never had a 6th Tardy. Dont be the first person to get one. The main office supports my use of this tardy policy. If you fail to show for one of the above detentions work details will be assigned after school. Im sure I can find something for you to do.
Web Page: I have created a Web Page that has the reading assignments for the semester. If you are absent you might check it out for your assignments. These assignments are subject to change. Please pay attention in class. The address is at: http://www.alaska.net/~prospero
