Alaska's Motto:  "North to the Future"
Alaska's Nickname:  "The Last Frontier"

Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867 and became an organized territory in 1912.  The territory entered the Union and became the 49th state on January 3, 1959.

Russia nicknamed the region the "The Greatland" meaning not one land, but many.
As even casual visitors to the region can attest, the Russian designation bolshaia zeml'a - the "Great Land" - is no misnomer.  In truth, Alaska is not one land, but many.  The distances are so immense and the diversity of terrain and climate so extreme that the Secretary of State Seward predicted in an 1869 speech in Sitka that the region might have to be admitted to the Union as several states.  Today some Alaska residents - far removed from the hub of the state government in Juneau - might complain that his advice should have been heeded - Harry Ritter, Alaska History
