Sensei Tanaka is an 8th degree black belt in Nihon Karate Do Kenwa Kai, a WKF (World Karate-Do Federation) 7th degree black belt, and a USANKF (USA National Karate-Do Federation) 7th degree black belt.   Sensei Tanaka is both a World Championship Kata and Kumite Referee for the World Karate Federation, which has over 144 countries as registered members today.  He is also one of four referee council members for the USANKF.

Sensei Tanaka has gained international recognition and has appeared on the covers of Karate Illustrated, Inside Kung Fu, Masters and Styles, Inside Karate, and has been featured several times in Black Belt Magazine.  Mr. Tanaka has hoped to educate the public as to the true spirit of the martial arts, the development of one's self to their fullest potential, and it's values through his demonstrations.

Mr. Katsutaka Tanaka began his study of the martial arts in 1960.  He attended Nagoya-Gakuin University, in Nagoya, Japan where he earned a B.A. degree in Economics in 1969.

In 1966, while on the university karate team, Mr. Tanaka took 2nd place in the Central Japan Karate Championship and went on to take first place in the championship in 1968.

In 1969, after graduating from NGU, Mr. Tanaka came to Anchorage, Alaska as an exchange instructor with Alaska Methodist University (presently Alaska Pacific University).  He began teaching at AMU as a Physical Education instructor of karate and table tennis.  At this time he also began taking courses at AMU and in 1974 received a B.S. in Business Administration.

Also during 1969, Mr. Tanaka founded Tanaka's Martial Arts Academy and in 1973 founded the Alaska Karate Championship.  In 1970, he began teaching karate for the University of Alaska, Anchorage (UAA), and in 1974 enrolled in UAA in order to earn a B.B.A. in Accounting in 1976.

Mr. Tanaka is a firm believer in improving one's self both mentally and physically.  to date, he has earned three university diplomas.  He credits his training in karate as the key to his success.  Training in the martial arts gained him the commitment, self-discipline, and concentration of the mind necessary to persevere and follow the plan that he laid out for himself to a successful conclusion.  In essence, this is the spirit of karate; to envision what lies before you, to commit your mind to seeing it through, and to give it your best to the end.

Since 1976, Mr. Tanaka has given his full attention to the building up of his own martial arts academy and to the development and promotion of karate in Alaska.   For this dedication, Mr. Tanaka received a special awards from the Alaska Legislature in 1980 and in 1995 from the Governor of Alaska.

Today, Mr. Tanaka's goals are to help his students become well balanced individuals by improving themselves and reaching their fullest potential mentally, physically, and academically.  Especially developing the self-disciplined mind, which is the most important ingredient to succeed in anything you do in this world.  He also hopes to someday produce the best martial artist in the world to help carry on the true spirit of the martial arts.   Ultimately, he is striving to help make our society a better place to live through his students.
