COPPER RIVER RAFTING ADVENTURE

Wrangell St. Elias National Park - Chitina to Cordova

"Writing in the Wilderness"
June 5, 1999

Dana Cheri, University of Alaska writing instructor joins us on a rafting adventure that begins in Chitina on the magnificent Copper River bordering Wrangell St. Elias National Park. We will do writing practice, journalizing and sharing on this 7-day expedition that features spectacular waterfalls and glaciers on its journey to the Copper River delta in Cordova. Watch for seals following the salmon run upstream, bear, eagle, moose and beaver - fabulous writing material for putting pen to paper. Trip includes a B&B stay in the coastal community of Cordova, accessible only by air or water.

Day 1
7am depart Anchorage by van for a scenic 5 hour drive east to the historic town of Chitina, gateway to Wrangell St. Elias National Park and our launch site. Enjoy continental breakfast and lunch enroute. Meet AWJ guides at the put-in at O'Brien Creek. We have time here to organize dry bags and tour the village. After a river orientation we push off for a float through Wood Canyon. Set camp among spectacular mountains.

Day 2
Layover for a great day of hiking along the old Northwestern Railway. Watch for brown and black bear. Enjoy the campfire and stories of the days adventures. Camps may vary from itinerary depending upon changes in river patterns.

Day 3 & 4
Journey by raft among waterfalls and mountains lush and green. If you listen closely you can hear Miles Glacier calving in the distance.

Day 5
As we approach the coast watch for hundreds of eagle and camp listening to the wilderness. Good hiking near camp.

Day 6
Watch for seals as you cross Miles Lake and float beneath the Million Dollar Bridge to our take-out at Child's Glacier. Great photo opportunities! Transfer by van along the only road (60 miles) to Cordova. Overnight at B&B in town.

Day 7
Free time to reflect on your journey. Return to Anchorage by air.
