We at Alaskan Gift & Gallery do our best to select a variety of the finest works available, whether traditional Alaskan native works or modern works. Most of the items on display in the shop are made by people from Alaska. Some of these items are one-of-a-kind and there are no guarantees that an "exact duplicate" can be obtained. (The nature of the material used is a determining factor, and the artist has to adjust to the shape and character of the pieces available.)

Alaskan artifacts and carvings
Traditional Alaskan art is very collectible. Each piece is individually carved or crafted - not mass-produced. Some of the materials used in these creations are fossilized pieces that may be thousands of years old and have their own unique character. Alaskan native art has a unique flavor for collectors and artisans. Their history dates back to the early ages and the work reflects a tradition of survival, dreams and history. Sometimes these are blended to create some stunning pieces.

There are many indigenous groups in Alaska. The Inupiat, Yu'pik & Siberian Yu'pik, Athabascan, Tlingit, Haida, Aleut, and the Dena'ina. The native art is diverse and dependent on the materials and resources available in the region where they were; this created a "cultural signature" in their craftsmanship.

This example of native artwork is made from fossilized whalebone, with walrus jawbone faces. It depicts the traditional blanket toss, which is now used for ceremonies, but used to be a way to spot animals for a hunt. The detail in this carving is truly amazing. Each face portrays an individual personality for each figure.

Modern Alaskan artists continue the tradition of making some beautiful works of art. Alaskan Gift & Gallery has a selection of pieces made by local artists and craftsmen. From jewelry, carvings (ivory, horn, wood, soapstone, and rock) turned wood, pottery, collector plates, local authors books & music, paintings, furs, slippers, and authentic Alaskan dolls. Alaskan Gift & Gallery provides the Alaskan artist a venue to display and market their work. When you come to Kenai, be sure to stop in and browse. It's as enriching as visiting a fine museum. Local residents visit regularly to see what is new. We invite you to do the same through this web site.
