V-1 Skate

This is the most popular skate technique. As you glide onto one ski, you push with your poles. As you glide onto the other ski you don't. Most people find that they have a preferred side--I usually pole as I glide onto my right ski--but you should practice it both ways. You will find it has a three beat waltz rythme. 1 pole plant and step with lead ski 2 glide 3 glide on non-lead ski.

Really good skiiers use this technique only on the uphills; on flats and downhills they use V1.5 or V2.
