The Sockeye Salmon is also commonly known as the "Red" salmon. The range in which they travel goes from as far south as the Sacramento River in California to the Tathurst Inlet in the Canadian Arctic. The average length is 1.5 - 2 ft/.46 - .61m. Their average weight ranges from 4-8 Lbs/1.8-3.6 kg. They are known for their brilliant spawning colors and characteristics. Both the male and female turn a brilliant red on the back and sides, with a pale to olive-green on the head and upper jaw, and white on the lower jaw. The breeding males develop a humped back with hooked jaws that are filled with sharp, dog like teeth.
