New Features in WhistleWare 3.2
Whistle Agent
Secure Remote Access Add-on
Whistle Communications now offers the Secure Remote Access add-on feature, which allows up to four simultaneous users to log in to your InterJet and access your Office network from a remote location. The Secure Remote Access connection is a private, secure connection that uses 40-bit encryption to protect your data from unauthorized access.
To use Secure Remote Access, you must first purchase the feature, then activate and configure it. Remote users must also configure client software on their remote computers to log in to the InterJet. The Secure Remote Access add-on feature does not include the remote client software.
NOTE:
If your InterJet uses a dial-on-demand connection, ensure that your ISP has
assigned a static, or fixed, WAN IP address to your InterJet.
Purchasing Secure Remote Access
To purchase the Secure Remote Access feature, click the Whistle Agent on the Agent Home page, then click add-ons. On the Add-ons page, you can click purchase feature to display a secure online order form on the Whistle Communications Web site. Once you purchase the feature, Whistle Communications sends you a confirmation e-mail message, which includes the key you need to activate the feature. After you receive the key, return to the Add-ons page, and activate Secure Remote Access by typing the key in the Key box, then clicking Apply.
Activating and Configuring Secure Remote Access
Once you activate Secure Remote Access, you must configure your InterJet to use it. To configure Secure Remote Access:
- On the Agent Home page, click the System Agent.
- Click network. The Network/View page appears.
- Under Select, click the button for the Office network.
- Click edit. The Edit Office Network page appears.
- Under Remote access, specify the required information.
For descriptions of the configuration items for remote access, click help.
Using Secure Remote Access
To use the feature, users must:
- Have the Secure Remote Access service enabled for their InterJet accounts. You can enable this service using the Personnel Agent.
- Have their own ISP accounts for Internet access.
- Be able to access the InterJet when they need to. If your InterJet uses a dial-on-demand connection, the InterJet may not be connected to the Internet when remote users attempt to log in. Therefore, ensure that you enable the Ring Dial-Back feature, so users can connect the InterJet to the Internet at any time.
- Install and configure Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) client software on their remote computers. The InterJet works with the following PPTP client software:
- Microsoft VPN Adapter: Included with Windows 98. For Windows 95, you may need to obtain the Dial-Up Networking Upgrade, version 1.3 or greater, from the Microsoft Web site: http://www. microsoft.com
- TunnelBuilder for Windows 95/98: Available from Network Telesystems: http://www.nts.com.
- Remote TunnelBuilder for Mac OS: Available from Network Telesystems: http://www.nts.com.
Using one of these PPTP clients, remote users can access all InterJet services, such as the dropbox; browse your intranet; and access all network resources that use TCP/IP, including printers and applications. In addition, remote users can use Windows Network Neighborhood to access other computers on your network for file sharing. However, remote users cannot use Chooser on a Macintosh to access other network resources using AppleTalk.
Installing and Configuring PPTP Client Software
When users configure their PPTP clients, they will need to specify the VPN server IP address. This address is the external, or WAN, IP address of the InterJet. To find this address, click the System Agent, click network, then click ports. Select the port you use to connect to your ISP, then click edit. The Current IP address box specifies the InterJet WAN IP address.
Installing and configuring the Microsoft VPN Adapter
Install and configure the Microsoft VPN Adapter by following the instructions that Microsoft provides. When configuring the adapter, specify the following information:
Host name or IP Address: Specify the WAN IP address of the InterJet.
Server Types tab: To access this tab, right-click the icon for your PPTP connection in the Dial-up Networking folder, then select Properties. Ensure that the following options are selected:
- Log on to network
- Enable software compression
- Require encrypted password
- TCP/IP
IMPORTANT: Ensure that the NetBEUI and IPX/SPX Compatible check boxes are clear. The InterJet does not support NetBEUI or IPX over the Secure Remote Access connection.
TCP/IP Settings dialog box: To access this dialog box, click TCP/IP Settings in the Server Types tab. Ensure that the following options are selected:
- Server assigned IP address
- Server assigned name server addresses
- Use IP header compression
- Use default gateway on remote network
Installing and configuring TunnelBuilder for Windows 95/98
Install and configure TunnelBuilder by following the instructions that Network Telesystems provides. When defining a tunnel, specify the WAN IP address of the InterJet, and your InterJet login name and password. For the VPN Protocol, select PPTP. For the Network Protocol, select IP only.
IMPORTANT: Ensure that the NetBEUI and IPX check boxes are clear. The InterJet does not support NetBEUI or IPX over the Secure Remote Access connection.
Installing and configuring Remote TunnelBuilder for Mac OS
Install and configure Remote TunnelBuilder by following the instructions that Network Telesystems provides. When configuring the software, specify the following information:
MacTCP or TCP/IP control panel: Specify information from your own ISP account.
Network or AppleTalk control panel: You do not need to configure this control panel because the InterJet currently does not support AppleTalk over the Secure Remote Access connection.
NTS PPP Dialer: Specify your ISP account information and modem information. In the VPN Settings dialog box, specify the WAN IP address of the InterJet and your InterJet login name and password. On the DNS tab, you may need to specify the internal IP address of the InterJet on your Office network.
System Agent
56K Modem Support (Not appplicable in all countries)
For faster Internet access over an analog
telephone line, the InterJet now works with either of the following external 56K modems
attached to the serial port:
Firewall Configuration
If you have networking expertise, you can now configure the InterJet firewall to allow external machines to establish direct connections with specified internal machines on your Office network. Using this feature, you can create small openings, or holes, in the InterJet firewall that allow certain types of Internet traffic to reach internal machines. This feature provides you with greater flexibility in configuring your network resources.
To configure the firewall, click the System
Agent on the Agent Home page, then click firewall.
Mail Agent
E-mail Forwarding Option
If your ISP assigns a dynamic WAN, or external, IP address to your InterJet, you can now avoid occasional problems with outgoing e-mail delivery by forwarding your outgoing e-mail to your ISP for delivery. You can use this option only if your ISP supports it. Your ISP will provide you with instructions for configuring the option on the Mail Options page.
New Features in WhistleWare 3.1
Mail Agent
Mail Cleanup Utility
The InterJet now has a cleanup utility that permanently deletes problem e-mail messages from a user's mailbox on the InterJet's mail server. This utility is useful when mail programs (such as Microsoft Outlook) fail unexpectedly or report that mail messages cannot be downloaded (usually because the mail program cannot recognize some characteristics of the message). When these problems occur, you can use the utility to delete one message at a time from the user's mailbox (starting with the first message, which is often the problem message) or all messages in the user's mailbox. To access this utility:

Note that this feature is not described in The
InterJet Administrator's Guide; however, you can find complete instructions in the
online Help.
System Agent
Complete Backup and Restore
You can now back up and restore the entire contents of the InterJet's hard disk, without the need for a third-party backup program. The complete backup feature backs up all your InterJet configuration data, such as user accounts, mailing lists, and network settings, and all the files on the InterJet's hard disk, including the files that users have stored in their personal folders. With the backup file, which you store on your local computer, you can restore the InterJet to the state it was in when you made the backup file. Note that this feature is not described in The InterJet Administrator's Guide; however, you can find complete instructions in the online Help.
Remote ISP Connections
You can now bring up your InterJet's ISP (WAN) connection to access the InterJet when you are away from the office. This feature is useful when you want to access e-mail remotely, but the InterJet is not connected to your ISP. To turn on this feature, you must log on to the InterJet as a System Administrator, go to the Connection page, and select the Enable ring dial-back checkbox. When you want to connect to your ISP, simply call the InterJet's telephone or ISDN line number, let it ring once, then hang up. The InterJet will detect the ring and dial your ISP to bring up your WAN connection. Note that this feature is not described in The InterJet Administrator's Guide; however, you can find complete instructions in the online Help.
Network Configuration Option
Normally, the InterJet automatically detects the machines connected to your Office and Perimeter networks. In rare cases, this auto-detection feature can affect the performance of a specially configured network. For these special cases, the InterJet now provides an option to turn off machine auto-detection on the Office and Perimeter networks. This option, called Disable automatic machine detection on this network, is on the Office and Perimeter Ethernet Network/Edit pages. Generally, you should not select this option unless instructed to do so by technical support. Note that this feature is not described in The InterJet Administrator's Guide.
New Features in WhistleWare 3.0
WhistleWare 3.0 adds a new look and the following enhancements.
Personnel Agent
New basic service
When you create or edit an InterJet account, you can now specify whether or not you want the user to be placed on the "all" mailing list. With this feature, you no longer have to edit the "all" mailing list to remove users from the list after you create their accounts.
Mail Agent
External e-mail options
You now have greater control over incoming and outgoing external e-mail. You can specify how often you want the InterJet to receive e-mail from addresses outside your organization, and you can specify how often you want the InterJet to send e-mail off-site.
Prevention of unauthorized use of the mail server (released
in WhistleWare 2.1)
The InterJet now provides an option that allows you to
prevent people outside your organization from using your mail server to transfer mail to
an address outside your network. Some people or organizations use other organizations';
mail servers to send large volumes of mail to specific addresses. If this happens, your
InterJet might remain connected to your ISP for long periods and your mail server's
performance can be affected. With this new option, you can limit the use of the InterJet's
mail server for sending mail outside to only those computers on your network. This option
is set to "on" by default. To change the setting, go to the Mail Agent's Options
page, then clear the check box labeled Only allow computers on our network to send mail
outside.
Mail queue options
You can now delete e-mail messages directly from any mail queue. This feature provides you with easier mail-queue management.
System Agent
Automatic ISDN connection speed
adjustments (released in WhistleWare 2.1)
If you use the InterJet's internal ISDN adapter (available on some InterJet models) and
your ISDN connection has two B channels, the InterJet uses its "bandwidth on
demand" feature to automatically adjust your connection speed to help reduce
connection fees. When there are few users accessing the Internet, the InterJet will use
only one B channel; if network traffic to the Internet increases, the InterJet will use
both B channels to maximize your connection speed.
Support for 56K Calls Over ISDN Voice Line
For ISDN connections, the InterJet now supports 56K calls over a voice line. With this option, your ISDN line transmits and receives data using a voice-mode ISDN line, which can save connection fees. This option, however, can be used only if your ISP offers or requires it.
Localized interface options
From time to time, Whistle Communications will offer a different
language version of WhistleWare, and you will be notified when such a version is
available. You can download a new language version from the System Agent's Maintenance
Upgrade page.
