In-depth local news and comment are the bread and butter of The Star. News stories in The Star are local angle stories with special focus on the City of Valdez, local courts, the Valdez school district, the trans-Alaska oil pipeline, the unparalleled sport fishing & hunting.

In particular, The Star likes colorful, off-the-wall stories about local events and characters. Example: It was The Star that broke the story  years ago about the urban bald eagle that swooped into the parking lot of a downtown service station and flew off with a Chihuahua in its talons.

More recently, The Star covered the story about the local angler, fishing off the Old City Dock for flounder when a Humpback whale hit his pixie. The whale threw the pixie and swam off. Thank goodness, since the fishermen was only using a 10-pound line.

Thank our sports editor, Robert Huston, for his insightful stories on local sports. Robert does it all: high school wrestling, basketball and volleyball. The Star also covers the Alaska sports such as dog mushing, ice bowling, snowshoe baseball, the annual Valdez Ice Climbing Festival, the World Extreme Skiing Championships.
