Congratulations to Chad ("Chucky") Nading who recently committed to Oregon State University.  He will be reunited with former teammate Anton Maxwell at OSU.  Chad is one of a very select handful of players to have signed a letter of intent straight out of an Alaskan High School into a D-1 baseball program.

littleball.gif (1346 bytes)  From the desk of Coach Wylie:
We are nearing the beginning of the 2006 season and we have lots of work ahead of us!  This will be my last season with the Tbirds coaching staff and I would like to end on a great note.  It will be a challenge to top the last 3 years, especially considering that the 2005 Post 34 Thunderbirds were the first Alaskan team in American Legion history to win 3 consecutive championships.  That is quite an accomplishment!  It is obvious that the months of hard work, dedication, and heart this squad demonstrated was what a championship team looks like.  In the championship game the Tbirds downed Chugiak, one of only 3 Alaska teams they lost to during the entire 2005 season.  The Mustangs were a very good team, with great pitching and the heart of champions too.  In the end though it was the Tbirds year.  The best game of the tournament and no doubt the 2005 season took place earlier in the week between the same 2 clubs.  The game had everything, pitching, defense and in the end clutch hitting.  The Mustang's Ben Rosen and Tbirds Zach Plancich, Jon Poland, Zac Beltz and Wade Zelazny hooked up in a great pitchers dual.   The big blow was a grand slam home run in the 11th inning by Tbird center fielder Trevor Harrison (the tournament MVP).  It was like every kids dream come true, full count bases loaded, tie game in the 11th inning, boom grand slam!  In reality the Tbirds had lots of heroes in the 2005 State Tournament.  Hitters Joey Scott, Chad Nading, Paul Lumpkin and Trevor all had lots of big hits.  Wade Zelazny pitched 11 2/3 outstanding innings when his team needed it and Zac Beltz was nothing short of amazing, pitching in every victory, including 3 big scoreless innings in the championship game.  Nick Nading was voted the tournament's outstanding pitcher with 2 victories.  Jake Plancich was tremendous behind the plate all tournament and he also had several clutch hits.  Louis Nance made a diving catch down the right field line that will probably be talked about for a long time and older brother Clarence displayed his outstanding defensive skills in nearly every game.  Zach Plancich and Mike Akers turned several text book double plays and Zach also crushed a 2-run homer (on his Grandpa's birthday) in the Tbirds second win over Fairbanks.  Each and every player on the East squad contributed something and all in all it was a great ending to a great season.   We ended the 2005 season with a 34-12 overall record.  I would like to say goodbye to our 4 team members that will not be with us next season:  Nick Nading, Jon Poland, Wade Zelazny and Andy Gustafson.  Each of you have been with the East program since your freshman year and you will be sorely missed.  Good luck Wade and Nick as you pursue a college baseball career!  Both of you have what it takes but you'll need to work hard and don't take anything for granted.  Jon, once you make up your mind on a college and possibly continuing your baseball career, the aforementioned advice applies to you too!  Andy, I hope you fulfill your dream and end up at OSU in the next year or 2 (go Beavs).  Thank you guys and for that matter, thanks to all of the 2005 East team and coaching staff , you have helped make the 2005 season a special one that I will remember for a long time!

Remember, we have proven again that we are one of the best teams in Alaska baseball history, now it’s up to us to stay there!
