Lulu Small is the hardest-working woman
in show business. Given her five-octave vocal range and penchant for
Halloween cross-dressing, some think she's also the hardest working man
in show biz! Lulu's been a regular on the Alaska entertainment circuit for
nearly three decades, a hit with the locals and visitors alike. Her
larger-than-life musical talent, boundless energy, and sometimes not-so-subtle
humor, adds up to a crazy evening of over-the-top entertainment.
Lulu was raised in sunny California,
but when she arrived in Alaska in 1978, like most folks, she fell in love with
the state and never looked back. Occasional winter getaways to Mexico
fueled her creative fires, inspiring her first album, "It's A Lulu Small
World" and a unique version of "LaBamba", with which she won a
Mexican karaeoke contest:
"What are the words to LaBamba?
Does any-body know / does it mean
chimichanga?
Or how about frijole, or Taco Bell..?
I do not like Taco Bell, it costs too much money
And they don't put enough meat in the
suckers!
I'm gon-na drop the cha-lupa
drop the cha-looo-pa!
Then I'm gonna kill the chi-huahua
Kiiiill the chi-hua-hua!"
Lulu currently lives in Homer with her
husband, David, and is the reigning queen of the 2007 Alaska State Fair's
"Great Alaska Husband Hollering Contest". She plays her mid-80s
Strat through the oldest Peavy Bandit on the planet (which will soon be given
away -- or used for target practice -- at an Aqua Nets gig). She's
finishing production of her second album, "LuLuPalooza: Large Sounds from
a Small Universe", songs inspired by living large in the Last
Frontier.
