| Whale biologists photograph the left side of orcas, and then use the unique shape, size, coloration, and nicks or scratches on the dorsal fin and saddle area at the dorsal's base to identify individual whales. By comparing photographs from different areas and years, the makeup and movements of individuals and pods can be plotted. |
