GAKONA SCHOOL ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES

Dear Families,

When a student is absent, a member of Gakona School staff will call home to check on child. There are several situations for absences which will involve intervention.

1.If a student has 5 unexcused absences in a 50 day period, it will constitute a violation of state law (A.S. 14.30.020) . A meeting with the lead teacher, parent/guardian, and student will be arranged to develop a plan for improvement of student?s attendance. The principal and superintendent will be notified. Approved absences constitute illness and prearranged situations in which parents have made phone contact or written communication.

2.If a student has missed 15 days of school, unexcused or excused, a note will be sent home regarding Gakona School Attendance Procedures/Copper River School District (CRSD) Elementary Handbook.

3.If a student has missed 15 days of school in a semester or 20 days of school in the year, unexcused or excused, a meeting will be arranged with the lead teacher, parent/guardian, and student to develop a plan for improvement of student?s attendance. The superintendent and principal will be notified. A note will be sent home prior to meeting those days.

4.If a student has missed 30 days of school, unexcused or excused, said student may be recommended for retention in their current grade level as pursuant CRSD Elementary Handbook .

If you have any questions involving this procedure, please feel free to call.

Sincerely,
