You may wonder why most offers in magazines refer to special terms for Alaskans. One of the reasons may be that Alaska law offers its residents protections not found in many other states. For example, in 1969 a law was created which provides that "a person may not offer merchandise for sale in any manner when the offer includes the voluntary and unsolicited sending of merchandise not actually ordered or requested by the recipient, either orally or in writing." As a result of this law, book and record clubs won't automatically send Alaskans this month's featured selection unless it is formally requested. The law also provides that "unsolicited merchandise received shall be considered an unconditional gift to the recipient who may use or dispose of it in any manner the recipient sees fit without obligation to the sender." This means that, unless you specifically request the merchandise, it is a gift to you to do with as you wish. You don't have to pay for the shipping costs to return the unwanted goods. Keep them, throw them away, or give them to friends or to charity. It's your choice.
