The Statute of Limitations Affects Your Injury Claim

Injured Alaskans sometimes wait until it is too late before taking action against those who caused the injury. Every claim for injuries has a certain date which is the last day to file the claim. This date is called the statute of limitations. After the statute of limitations expires, you may be forever prevented from filing a claim in court for your damages. In many cases such as automobile accidents, there is a statute of limitations in Alaska which is two years from the date that the accident occurred. For example, if you are in a car accident on May 1, 1997, you have until May 1, 1999 to file your claim. There are certain exceptions to this rule. But the most important thing to remember is that you should consult with an attorney early on, rather than later, to avoid missing this important date. Often, lawyers are reluctant to assist clients who call them a few days prior to the expiration of the statute of limitations. Learning what this date is soon after your accident will help you to prepare you case in a timely manner.
