A new law was recently passed in Alaska which changes how parents can claim children as dependents for tax purposes.
Under the new law, a court may not grant a noncustodial parent an absolute right to claim a child as a dependent under federal income tax laws. The court may grant a noncustodial parent this right in a particular tax year provided that the parent satisfies the requirements of federal law and was not behind in child support payments at the end of the tax year in an amount more than four times the monthly child support obligation. The law goes into effect on July 1, 1999.
