•• The ETCH is a criterion-referenced tool designed
to evaluate manuscript and cursive handwriting skills of children
in Grades 1 through 6.
•• Its focus is to assess a student's legibility
and speed of handwriting tasks similar to those required of
students in the classroom.
•• ETCH tasks include alphabet and numerical writing,
near-point and far-point copying, dictation, and sentence
generation.
•• It assesses legibility components, pencil grasp,
hand preference, pencil pressure, manipulative skills with
the writing tool, and classroom observations.
•• ETCH administration is 15 to 25 minutes with
scoring using standardized scoring guidelines and procedures
in 15 to 20 minutes.
•• Scoring targets legibility of individual tasks
and total tasks and speed. A scoring standard for legible
letters and words has been established. An interrater reliability
study is complete for both the ETCH-Manuscript and ETCH-Cursive.
•• This user-friendly test kit includes: reproducible
score sheets and response booklets; quick reference sheets;
wall charts; task sheets; scoring card; and 163-page Examiner's
Manual detailing test administration and scoring procedures
for legibility.
•• ETCH results allow for easy documentation, a
blueprint for intervention, integrated IEP goals and objectives,
and a language to share with parents and school personnel.
