Physical & Chemical Sciences
KLI offers physical oceanographic, sediment, soil, and water quality, non-point source pollution, meteorological, and hydrologic services to meet the environmental, regulatory, and engineering needs of our clients. Through our consistent performance in carrying out quality programs, KLI has become a leading consultant in the physical/chemical sciences field.
Oceanography and Water Quality
KLI provides specialized physical oceanographic and water quality services ranging from theoretical calculations and computer modeling to extensive field investigations, as well as:
- Time series correlations, spectral analyses, and sophisticated hydrodynamic modeling using in-house computing and plotting facilities
- Computer-aided design and custom fabrication of instrumentation moorings
- Collection of engineering design criteria for harbors, marinas, outfalls, and other coastal and marine structures
- Use of satellite imagery to aid in the analysis of coastal plume, sea surface temperature, and gyre data
- Measurements of oceanographic and water quality parameters to answer applied and theoretical problems
- Development of site-specific water quality criteria for National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permitting efforts
- Determinations of wave, storm surge, current, and wind forces on coastal and marine structures
Soil and Sediment
KLI has performed numerous soil/sediment projects for both engineering and environmental applications. Our experience includes field sampling, laboratory analysis, data analysis, and interpretation and reporting. KLI offers the following services:
- Sampling of soil and sediment by various methodologies (grabs, core samplers, vibracores, borings, and soil vapor probes)
- Accretion/erosion and bathymetry surveys
- Analyses of fate, effect, and transport of dredge spoils and drilling muds, including computer modeling and predictions
- Tier I, II, and III dredge material chemistry and toxicity analyses and evaluations
- Laboratory analyses of grain size, mineral type, and chemical composition, etc.
- Littoral transport and suspended sediment determinations utilizing Optical BackScatterance (OBS), sediment traps, and other methodologies
Nonpoint Source and Hydrology
KLI/TS offers its clients specialized Nonpoint Source (NPS) and hydrologic services including automated modem-based storm runoff monitoring stations, illicit discharge and connections monitoring and characterizations, Part 1 and 2 permit and regulatory assistance, database management, modeling, and Geographic Information System (GIS) capabilities. These services include:
- Customized instrumentation for manhole, open channel, weir, flume, and pipe installations to fulfill a wide array of sampling requirements, including client personnel training programs
- Flow-proportioned water quality sampling utilizing automated microprocessor-based monitoring instrumentation
- Discharge modeling, bank erosion studies, suspended sediment and bedload sampling, and instream flow studies
Meteorology
KLI provides offshore and onshore meteorology services for environmental and engineering design studies. Services include:
- Monitoring wind, barometric pressure, air temperature, rain, and other parameters including telemetry of data from remote and offshore locations
- Wind and wave hindcasts, extreme wind and geostrophic analyses, and statistical analysis of time series data
- Customized data acquisition packages to fulfill real-time monitoring needs, equipped with a variety of meteorological and air quality sensors
In addition, KLI/TS owns state-of-the-art field instrumentation that includes current meters, tide and wave gauges, fluorometers, CTDs, GPS (Global Positioning System) and Miniranger navigation systems, water samplers, and satellite telemetry equipment. This allows immediate mobilization for a variety of scientific projects.
