Analytical Chemistry and Toxicology
KLI offers analytical chemistry and aquatic toxicology services for environmental, regulatory compliance, and hazardous waste studies. Specifically, KLI offers comprehensive laboratory services for the chemical analysis of contaminants in soils and sediments, sludges, water, and tissues. Toxicological services include acute and long-term aquatic toxicity testing for freshwater and marine species and product testing under Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) standards. The capacity of handling both chemical and toxicological analyses within our laboratories allows us to perform multidisciplinary programs such as toxicant characterization studies, Toxicity Identification Evaluations (TIE), and Toxicity Reduction Evaluations (TRE).
KLI's laboratories utilize a rigorous Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) program. Strict sample tracking and chain of custody procedures are followed in the laboratory as required by EPA, FDA, or RCRA. EPA, ASTM, or COE-specified and state-approved methods are used as appropriate for organic and inorganic analyses and toxicological testing.
Analytical Chemistry
KLI's laboratories offer the capability of performing routine analyses of soils, sediments, sludges, water, and tissues. Laboratory facilities include state-of-the-art instrumentation such as gas chromatograph/mass spectrometers and atomic absorption spectrophotometers. Services include:
- Analyses of hazardous materials, effluents, wastewater, sludges, and industrial discharges for priority pollutants
- Ability to handle soil, estuarine and marine sediment, water, seawater and tissue (bioaccumulation) matrices
- Determination of fuel and solvent concentrations in various matrices
- Pesticide analyses for both agricultural and environmental applications
- Trace metals analyses in a metals-free clean laboratory, using ultra-low detection limits for both seawater and fresh water samples
- Chemical analysis of drinking water
- Agricultural support and consulting: analyses of nutrients, soil, water quality, and composting products
- Specialty analyses of organotins and PCTs at very low detection limits using marine waters, sediments, and tissues
- Dredge material testing using EPA and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers special protocols
- The use of standard EPA methods for gas chromatographic analysis of organic contaminants in various matrices
- Field sampling capabilities to address leaking underground storage tanks including on-site soil vapor analyses
- Solid waste characterization: Experience with CAM and EP/TCLP procedures on soil and sediment samples, sludges, and other materials
Toxicological Testing
KLI offers 15 years of experience in aquatic toxicology using a wide range of life stages of marine, estuarine, and fresh water species. Testing is performed following state and federal standardized protocols. In addition, we perform bioassay testing adhering to strict GLP requirements for product testing. KLI has the experience and ability to conduct bioassays for testing water, sediments, soils, sludges, and other materials, including:
- Dredged material according to EPA and COE Tier I, II, and III "Green Book" protocols
- Industrial and municipal effluents
- Drilling fluids and produced waters
- Nonpoint source environmental samples such as agricultural drain water and urban runoff samples
- Hazardous materials testing according to California 22 protocol
- Aquatic GLP testing of industrial products
KLI's toxicological laboratories provide:
- Three-species effluent characterization
- Sediment solid phase, suspended phase, and elutriate bioassays
- Phase I, II, and III Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) and Toxicity Reduction Evaluation (TRE) testing
- Sediment and water quality evaluations
- Commercial product testing
- Culture capabilities for marine crustaceans, molluscs, and polychaetes
- Microtox Testing
- Mobile bioassay trailers for on-site effluent evaluation and bioaccumulation studies
- U.S. EPA intercalibration testing
