Biological and Ecological Services
The complex demands placed on our natural resources may result in changes to ecosystems. As a result, environmental problems arise that require creative and effective solutions. At KLI, we have proven our ability to plan, implement, and conduct comprehensive biological and ecological studies that have encompassed a diversity of biological regimes. These studies have addressed both existing and potential future impacts to ecosystems as a result of natural and man-induced alterations to the environment.
Marine Biology
The need to understand marine ecosystems is extremely important to managers and planners concerned with integrating resource utilization and conservation. KLI offers consulting services that range from monitoring the impacts of offshore drilling operations to understanding the dynamics of benthic and intertidal communities. KLI services in this field include:
- Hard- and soft-bottom benthic surveys
- Rocky intertidal ecological studies, including recolonization and habitat recovery
- State-of-the-art deep-sea Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) photoquadrat sampling
- Studies of bioaccumulation of toxic substances in marine and fresh water organisms and vegetation
- Fish migration, life-history, and population baseline studies
- Marine mammal surveys
- Biological assessments of rare, threatened, and endangered species
- Impact studies, including NRDA assessment efforts for oil and hazardous chemical spills
Aquatic Taxonomy Laboratories
KLI maintains an in-house laboratory specializing in the sorting and identification of aquatic flora and fauna. We provide professional taxonomists, extensive reference collections, database management, and analytical software for biological and taxonomic programs. Capabilities include:
- Hard- and soft-bottom species identification
- Algal taxonomy
- Photoquadrat analysis and data management system utilizing error checking and voice recognition software
Freshwater and Terrestrial Biology
KLI and associates offer expertise in the area of freshwater and terrestrial biology. We provide services in:
- Freshwater fisheries ecology
- Aquatic habitat evaluation
- Vegetation and wetlands surveys
- Bird and wildlife surveys
- Aerial photo interpretation
- In-stream flow studies
- Estuarine surveys
KLI's staff of biologists has designed and implemented numerous field studies including identifying bird populations as components of an Arctic ecosystem and studies of rare and endangered species in California.
