Mt. Magnificent (4285') From "30 Hikes in Alaska"
The climax of the ridge paralleling Eagle River on the north. Good views back into Eagle River valley and out over Knik Arm. Though not difficult when free of snow, Magnificent is more of a climb than a walk, with no trail above timberline and quite steep gullies and ridges to the summit; those not interested in completing the ascent will find the hike to the 3500-foot base of the peak very pleasant, affording views almost as good as those on top.
Follow the Glenn Highway east from Anchorage 14-1/2 miles to the community of Eagle River. Take a sharp right around the Eagle River School onto Eagle River Road. _______ Park here, well out of the way.
Walk uphill on the road, bearing left where it forks. In about 1/2 mile is a private home perched on a narrow shelf. Obtain permission to proceed here. Continue up a little-used road which doubles back sharply at this point, reaching timberline in less than a mile. Follow the ridge to the east (right) about 1-1/2 miles to 4285-foot Magnificent. About 1/2 mile short of the summit one can turn northeast, traversing the back or north slope of a minor peak, thus saving some time and energy.
Several summit routes are possible. Perhaps the easiest is a traverse across the south or front slope to a steep, grassy gully immediately to the east (right) of the high point. A scramble leads to the ridge less than 100 feet from the peak.
