South Fork Eagle River Valley Trail
Excellent views of the interior Western Chugach and the vast Eagle River drainage system. Also the best place to see Eagle Glacier. Close-up looks at alpine flora and wildlife.
From the Glenn Highway near Eagle River, take the Eagle River Loop/Hiland Road exit. Turn right on Hiland Drive and go approx. 7 miles, turn right on South Creek Road, cross the bridge and turn right on West River Drive to the parking lot. After the boardwalk the trail climbs to a bench on the mountainside, following it for 1.5 miles before descending to cross a footbridge over the South Fork, climbs back to a low bench then continues up the valley to Eagle and Symphony Lakes. Most of the trail is open tundra. Winter travel crosses avalanche prone slopes.
