Tikishla Peak

A sharp, double-peaked mountain on the skyline due east of Anchorage. Actually the summits are points on a ridge leading farther back to Tanaina Peak.  Views of Temptation Peak, the Eagle River peaks, and the Alaska and Tordrillo Ranges.  A long day or easy overnight hike.
Drive 3-1/2 miles east on Tudor Road from Seward Highway and turn right on Campbell Airstrip Road. In 1 mile turn left toward the mountains on Basher Road. Drive 4 miles to the end.

Begin with a steep scramble through brush onto the open slopes of Near Point (3050).  Climb over Near Point, then proceed east down and along the ridge 1/2 mile to the second distinct notch.  Bear left and traverse considerably downward 1/2 mile to the; North Fork of Campbell Creek at a point where another stream descends from a bowl below Tikishla on the opposite (north) side of the valley to join North Fork.  Camp here (last water except for snow patches).

Cross the stream and head for the obvious wide ridge leading east up to the summits about 3 miles away.  At the very tops of the two narrow summits, which are several hundred yards apart, there is a bit of delicate stepping.  The ridge continues on but drops before rising again near Tanaina Peak (5350') 1-1/2 miles to the east, the highest point on the ridge.

Return over Near Point is recommended.  One can descend either side of the North Fork valley to the road, but the way becomes increasingly cluttered with confusing animal trails, alder, devil's club, and groves of trees.

Black bear, grizzly bear moose, and ptarmigan have been encountered by hikers in the lovely North Fork valley, which has neither roads, trails, cabins, nor powerlines.
