The Wedge Sheep Trail by Shawn Lyons ADN, 6/28/92 "Gems of the Chugach"
Hidden on the backside (east slope) of the Wedge is what I believe to be the best maintained and one of the least traveled, at least by people, trails in the entire Chugach Front Range. This is a trail maintained not by the state park or any volunteer group, but by the constant hoofing of Dall sheep along its well-trodden easily negotiable length. The trail itself traverses the back side of the Wedge from Ship Lake Pass, just below the Ramp, over to the jagged ridge below Powerline Pass Peak. The only problem with this trail is that it is close to a six-mile hike from the Glen Alps entrance to the park just to get to either end of it. You have to go around either side of the Wedge or over it, if you choose. Still it's worth the effort on a clear day. The sun is hot on the rocks, and the chance of seeing sheep is high. There has never been a sunny day when I have not seen sheep on this trail. (Another well-maintained and scenic sheep trail, for anyone who is interested, almost circles the Temptation PeakValley on the elusive north side of the Tanaina-Tikishla ridge.)
