Introduction I had been hiking in the Chugach State Park area for about 6 months and figured I had covered all the major areas to see - boy, was I ever wrong! After taping together a wall map of the entire park, I realized I had barely scratched the surface. Unfortunately, there were not any comprehensive guides to the backcountry, so I didn't know what I was missing.
As I continued to learn about the Park, more information came to my attention. "55 Ways" is a good introduction. I prefer it's predecessor, "30 Hikes" - covers more of the lesser known areas. Talking with folks while looking at a map is best. Old copies of "Scree", the Mountaineering Club of Alaska's newsletter, has trip reports and is an outstanding guide to peaks in the back country.
This booklet is a compilation of articles I found helpful and interesting, from a variety of sources. It's a work in progress - there are lots of omissions and typos. I've attempted to acknowledge sources for the articles.
Also included are a number of accident and avalanche reports. Many people have been injured and killed while adventuring in the Chugach Mountains. Try to learn from their mistakes and hike again another day. Don't put yourself in a situation where you let a lot of cumulative effort cause you to ignore a hazardous backcountry situation.
Many of the trip reports are old and don't give accurate route descriptions. Many are also flat wrong! Talk with knowledgeable hikers before striking out on the more challenging treks. Members of MCA and employees of AMH are excellent sources of current route conditions.
If you have any comments or suggestions, send me a note.
