The Geniune Alaskan Experience

Kayaking: Paddle the protected waters of Wrangell Narrows, venture into Frederick Sound or circumnavigate Mitkof Island and ride the incoming tide practically to your doorstep. (Kayaks available for rent from local outfitters.)
[ Tongass Kayak Adventures ]

Fishing: Arrange boat rentals or guided charters through several local sport fishing outfitters and target halibut, several species of salmon and trout, or all of the above. There are many places around mitkof Island where you can drop a line in the water whether by foot or by boat. [ Petersburg Creek Charters & Screaming Reel Charters ]

Hiking: The US Forest Service maintains several access roads and trails near Petersburg, allowing extensive hiking excursions through the awesome beauty of the surrounding Tongass National Forest. Also you can visit the Blind Slough salmon hatchery.

Flightseeing: Enjoy a ride on a float plane over the nearby Coast Range: get an eagle's eye view of LeConte Glacier, circle the rock spire of Devil's Thumb, swoop between the rocky cliff walls of a long fjord. Or use Petersburg as your base for flying into a secluded cove or a pristine mountian lake. [ Pacific Wing Flight Charters & Kupreanof Flying Service.]

Enjoy a unique culture: Petersburg is a working commercial fishing community, one of the most successful fishing ports in the nation. Its fleet is a modern "combination" fleet that targets salmon, herring, halibut, cod, a variety of crab species and delectable Petersburg shrimp, which frequently can be purchased "over the side" from fishermen. When taking a walk along the floats of the town's harbors, you will see modern steel and fiberglass vessels tied up alongside older wood vessels that often have been in families for two and three generations. The condition of nearly all the vessels is clean and well-maintained with the best available gear in evidence, and indication of the sucess of the Petersburg fishermen who range the Pacific from Southern California to the Bering Sea. [ Vistor information@ Petersburgalaska.com & Petersburg's Chamber of Commerce ]

Guided Tours: Whale watching, wildlife viewing opportunities, scenic glacier tours ( LeConte Glacier is North Americas southern most glacier accessible from tidewater) and voyages up the spectacular Stikine River can also be arranged through local agents. [ Alaskan Scenic Waterways ]

Coming to Petersburg on business or for a sporting event at the high school? You won't find a more convenient location. We're located an easy walk from downtown businesses, the court house, city hall, the US Forest Service Petersburg Ranger District Office and Petersburg High School.
