Web Page Stuff

Emerald's
De-mystification of Web Pages!!!

GETTING STARTED

Web pages are not difficult to understand or create, all you need is:

Space on a server to store your page.

An editor of some sort.

Either knowledge of HTML or Netscape Gold

Software to upload your page and pics to the Internet.

And lots and lots of time to play with it!!!

SPACE

Some internet providers give you space on their server when you sign up with them. Check to see if your provider does this.

If not, there are two locations I'm aware of that let users have space for free:

Geocities

Angelfire

EDITOR

Editors are software you use to create your page using HTML coding. There are several editors you can download from the Internet. We both used editors downloaded from the net.

I used HTML Assistant Pro 97 you can download this for a 30 day trial
Roy used Netscape Navigator Gold's Editor

Also try Microsoft Front Page or if you want it really easy try the The Home Page Maker which will do it for you, just fill in the template!!!

HTML CAPABILITY

HTML is a fun and logical language to learn and use. I've made most of my pages using the language. Here are a couple of links that I also found useful in learning HTML.

Learning HTML This page was very helpful and informative for me.

A Beginners Guide to HTML

Netscapes Web Reference Page Netscape's official HTML information pages. A great source for beginning (as well as advanced) HTML writers. From the mouth of the ones who started (or at least popularized) it all, as it were.

The World Wide Web Consortium These are the people responsible for establishing the HTML standards. All the information you ever wanted on HTML, and more. It's pretty technical, but a good kind of technical.

Composing Good HTML

Hint: A great way to learn is to select View and then Document Source using Netscape when you are looking at a page with something that you might want to try. This shows you the entire HTML code for that page you are looking at. You can also download the HTML file from any page by right clicking on the link to the page and selecting Save Link As.

IDEAS FOR STUFF

Topics are of your own choosing! Pick an interest, passion, issue ~ or just have fun with whatever!!!

Surf around and check out other pages to get an idea of what you like and what you don't!

Most pictures, icons, etc. are fair game on the net. If you see something you like you can usually "borrow" it. Watch for restrictions on this though and give credit where credit is due!

Some of our favorite sites for "stuff" are listed below:

Eric's Collection of Pictures A gold mine of stuff!!!!

Terry Gould's Icons

HTML and Pics Archive

WBS Pics

Gif Animation Station

Multimedia Images

Icon Bazaar

This doesn't even scratch the surface......

UPLOADING SOFTWARE

You need FTP software to send your page and pics to the Internet. Netscape can do this, but I didn't like it. Here are some other choices to download.

We use this software - FTP.

TIME

I can't help you with this one!!!! It's up to you. I do know once you are bitten buy this bug...... you'll never be the same!!

FINAL THOUGHTS

It's a good idea to become familiar with rules regarding Copyright On The Internet. This site has some great information.

Lastly, the best advice I can give is don't be afraid or intimidated by the whole HTML thing!!
Dive right in, it's fun and easy!!
