Alaska has all five species of loons that exist. Here, on the nest incubating, is the Pacific Loon (Gavia pacifica) which used to be called the Arctic Loon. Ornithologists have recently separated them as two distinct species. Except for the Arctic Loon, which in summer is only on the extreme western coast of Alaska and in eastern Siberia, we can see all the other loon species on any Alaska Natural History Expedition.
