2 CONT OK, you evidently did meet my grandfather. As to your 
2 CONT directions for getting there. Excellent memory and completely accurate except 
2 CONT for the last turn. After reaching the top of the hill you made a left turn on 
2 CONT what is known as Peach orchard road. At the crest of the hill if you had 
2 CONT instead looked right some 40 feet before reaching Peach Orchard Road you 
2 CONT would have been staring right at Granddaddy Charles Harris Austin's home 
2 CONT about 100 feet away. Now I believe I know why you made the mistake and turned 
2 CONT left. That might have been where the James & Laura Austin Tyler somewhere out 
2 CONT on the hill further out Peach Orch! ard Road. I really don't know for sure. 
2 CONT What I do know is that was at one time the home of James Walter and Sarah 
2 CONT Epps Austin's home. The home I am told by Aunt Lutie Austin Jones was out 
2 CONT there about 300 yards but kinda down the hill on the right in a big old white 
2 CONT house with a smaller house just to the left of it. None of there houses are 
2 CONT standing today nor have they since I can remember. Only house I remember out 
2 CONT there was the home of "X" and his family. "X" was the ol black man that help 
2 CONT Granddad out on the farm. I remember while playing on the front side of the 
2 CONT farm one sunny summer day ol X spotted us and came lumbering over. He pipes 
2 CONT up and says "Los o mercy I is half a hunerd today, I is done seen fifty 
2 CONT years". He didn't live much longer after that. Some of the earlier married 
2 CONT kids of James lived in the smaller house I am told at least early in their 
2 CONT marriages. So it just might be that the house continued to be the home of! the 
2 CONT Tyler's at least for some time. Need to check the land records to prove that 
2 CONT I guess. If I am not mistaken J. W. only rented that property while living 
2 CONT there. I could be wrong there. He and family had moved to Maury County 
2 CONT sometime after 1880. Can't tie that down either for sure. I also know J. W. 
2 CONT Austin bought a farm high on a hill located on the road between Culleoka and 
2 CONT Campbell Station to the south. That was about 1.5 miles going south of 
2 CONT Culleoka on the right side up on the hill. Had a hard time finding water and 
2 CONT making the land productive and I believe it might be why he relented to 
2 CONT moving to McAlester, OK.

2 CONT Last sunday I visited the site of the Drewy and Harris Austin homeplace drawn 
2 CONT up by Nancy Austin Hall of Dallas TX. You know the map I sent you. I took 
2 CONT pictures of 
2 CONT the area. It is just inside the south Moore County line as you trace up 
2 CONT Mullberry Creek on a map. Moore County was a part of Lincoln County at the 
2 CONT time Drewy lived there in the 1820s. The map shows the West Fork of Mulberry 
2 CONT Creek and Mullberry Creek junction as the home of Drewy Austin and his sons 
2 CONT William Phillip (Willis) and Harris Austin. I believe I have located their 
2 CONT home sites. Had my wife along for the ride and she was too impatient to allow 
2 CONT me to interview any of the locals to see if anyone know of any old cemeteries 
2 CONT that might have their stones. There is a road I believe that splits the area 
2 CONT between Drewy & Harris's place. It is now called Knox Lane. It turns off east 
2 CONT from Hwy 129. I made pictures but they don't show much due to the trees and 
2 CONT distance from the road. This is a quaint little valley following the Mulberry 
2 CONT Creek and West Fork nestled between the hills with plenty of rich farm land 
2 CONT and sites high enough from the flood plain to be ideal for our pioneering 
2 CONT early settlers. Best I can recall from my history Davy Crockett lived for a 
2 CONT time there also. Though the source said that Mulberry Creek merged into Duck 
2 CONT River. It actually flows south into the Elk River. I noticed the main road 
2 CONT went thru there going from Shelbyville TN to Fayettteville, TN. on a map I 
2 CONT saw of Tennessee during 1820.

2 CONT I think I was as surprised as you were when I saw that post I havent been 
2 CONT there in awhile did see Karen had a post she is like 5th cousin.
2 CONT I would say Uncle Clifford was a workaholic he was a farmer and was working 
2 CONT at the carbon plant for awhile then moved to town and worked full time just 
2 CONT at the carbon plant,then he went to work at the Columbia Water Co.where he 
2 CONT worked until a month or so before he passed away.
2 CONT He belonged to the Baptist Church and would do any thing for any one if it 
2 CONT was money you needed  or the last bite of food he had .He worked hard every 
2 CONT since I can remember, I would say he was a humble man, his brothers said he 
2 CONT was the best Dawson in the family but hate to tell you Ernest is like him he 
2 CONT even sounds like him  and looks like him I said as long as Ernest lived Uncle 
2 CONT Clifford would.My sister and I use to go in summer and stay with them some 
2 CONT and they also had Aunt Oma's brother's kids for a year or so.
2 CONT Dont think you could say he was adventurous not while I knew him,his Health 
2 CONT was pretty good until he got sick just before he passed away dont think they 
2 CONT knew what was wrong with him I was in Ga. then.
2 CONT He liked to kid especially my mother but the other two brothers did also.
2 CONT My husband learned fast about them after one trip home.My children missed out 
2 CONT on them Kathy is the only one that barley remembers him she was three he 
2 CONT bought her about 5 watermellows when we were home and his Grand kids came  he 
2 CONT  cut them and she was going around eating out of all of them and I got on her 
2 CONT he said he bought them for her to eat what she wanted she remembers that 
2 CONT still.
2 CONT Now for my Grandma and Grandad they lived with us for awhile ,I was 9 when 
2 CONT she died but remember a lot about her she was sick a lot of time,My Mother 
2 CONT said she had such hard time when Uncle Marvin was born was in bed long time 
2 CONT after,and never had good health after then.
2 CONT My Granddad like to ramble that was one reason they moved in with us he would 
2 CONT leave her alone and  they were afraid she would get bad off by her self.He 
2 CONT had asthma and took pneumonia and lived about a week died in 1948
2 CONT Kathy started doing Genealogy she had some in 3rd grade and i had to start 
2 CONT trying to find out and we didnt get far as they just wanted like the Dad Gdad 
2 CONT and as far as could go and I had to do some writing and calling but was just 
2 CONT minor in school what she needed so she had what she had then and she got 
2 CONT interested now I have taken over.
2 CONT No im not like Uncle Clifford we were more like my Dads family,now my oldest 
2 CONT Daughter looks a lot like Uncle Marvin's oldest child , but then she has her 
2 CONT Dads look's also.
2 CONT Im 67 years old I  met Robert In San Diego we were married there in 1957 
2 CONT lived in Hawaii 2 years Robert was in Marine Corps Kathy was born there,we 
2 CONT moved here in 1960 been here every since Robert was a police Officer 33 
2 CONT years,I have a Son and Daughter on the Police Force and Kathy worked in DA's 
2 CONT Office  for about 2 years My other Son is truck driver and then have on has 
2 CONT Cerebral Palsy she graduated College 2 years ago and now going for her 
2 CONT Masters from University of Maryland doing it on the internet.
2 CONT Kathy and I are doing Bramlett,Dawson, Burgess, Franklin,Henry's <<<our last 
2 CONT name Rentfro,Heilfiker,Toomey about 2 months ago found the Heilfiker same way 
2 CONT found yours only it was posted one night and found it the next.She said it 
2 CONT was so strange she was talking about it at dinner table and posted it after 
2 CONT dinner.

2 CONT was the medicine the Dr gave him started his problems Mother had gallstones

2 CONT I  was 2 or so and i remember sitting on their porch and literally 
2 CONT eating my way thru a whole watermelon by myself.  mom completes the story 
2 CONT like this:  her mom (grandma...clifford's sister) got all over uncle clifford 
2 CONT for giving me the whole melon.  he said, lucy i'll go buy more watermelons 
2 CONT for the other kids but im enjoying watching this baby eat this one.  that's 
2 CONT not a direct quote but the essence of the story.

2 CONT my grandmother lived for a time behind uncle clifford and aunt oma.  she had 
2 CONT an outhouse and i remember bathing in a bathtub in the kitchen, warmed from 
2 CONT the stove.  its one of my favorite memories.  we still have the tub!

2 CONT   Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Auston, age 83 passed away Tuesday morning at a local 
2 CONT hospital after a short illness. 
2 CONT   She is the husband of the late James W. Auston and the daughter of  the 
2 CONT late James Francis  Dewitt Epps. She is survived by eight children, Charles 
2 CONT H. Auston, Culleoka TN, John G. Auston, Ulan;  Jim Auston, Crowder; Will 
2 CONT Auston, Ulan, Oklahoma, Fannie Turner, Columbia TN,  Media  Johnson,

2 CONT Re:  directions to the farm where Seavy Hight and Willie lived ---from
2 CONT Culleoka drive to the Central Church.  It is red brick, Presbyterian, and on
2 CONT the right.  (Seavy helped to build it.)  Turn right on that road.  Go till
2 CONT you see Seavy Hight road on the left.  Take that left turn, drive till the
2 CONT bridge.  The bridge is just after the Hight farm place.  So, if you cross
2 CONT bridge, you went too far.  The left side of the road was 50 acres where the
2 CONT house stood, the garage/smokehouse and the barn.  The right side  of the
2 CONT road is another 50 acres also belonging to them.  Last time I was there, it
2 CONT was planted in cotton.  Mostly the creek was sort of deep in the creekbed,
2 CONT but once I saw it rise up to the foundation of the house.  Across the bridge
2 CONT on the right is the Floyd Craig property.
2 CONT 
2 CONT As to when Gladys was born, Mom calculates it to be about 1910, or 1911.
2 CONT   Gladys is the third born, and James (Sonny, Sally,
2 CONT Brother), was the fourth.  James has a son who is a minister.  His daughter,
2 CONT Donna Faye, lives on Bear Creek Pike and is married to a prominent man.
2 CONT Inez, the wife, is not too well, having a form of Alzheimers, which must
2 CONT have developed recently, since she was fine when I visited three years ago.
2 CONT 
2 CONT As to the chronology of Willie's life:  She quit school after 11th grade to
2 CONT marry, and give birth. Mom was 5 years old when Grandmother went back to
2 CONT school to finish 12'th grade.  At the same time, Mom went to First grade.
2 CONT So they were both going at the same time. Grandmother graduated from Culleoka High in 1929
2 CONC .  During the 5 year break from school was when they
2 CONT worked at the cantalope factory, and also the tomato factory.  They wrapped

2 CONT After graduation, Grandmother went to secretarial school in Nashville.  She
2 CONT boarded there for two years.  During that time she met Seavy.  After they
2 CONT married, she didn't work again until the war.

2 CONT During the war there was a teacher shortage; the county supervisor searched
2 CONT school records to find people who might qualify as teachers.  Grandmother
2 CONT was asked to start substituting, which led to full time teaching.  In
2 CONT addition to Bryant Station school and Riverside, she also taught at Bear
2 CONT Creek.  She attended workshops to get a permanent teaching certificate.  In
2 CONT the 1960's she attended Peabody College, then UT at Murfreesboro, then
2 CONT Knoxville, to earn her Bachelors degree.  While at Knoxville she won a
2 CONT scholarship in civil aeronautics.  As a result of that she spent a summer in
2 CONT the mid sixties flying with the Air Force in a training group.
2 CONT 
2 CONT As to Alzheimers... I have always felt
2 CONT in my heart that she was fine until the school district retired her.  When
2 CONT an active, dedicated person is put out to pasture, it cannot be good.  But
2 CONT that is not the current medical approach, so draw your own conclusions.

2 CONT One other thing mom said this morning was that an Austin man, sort of older,
2 CONT used to take care of all the walkers who had to come from the Holler.  He
2 CONT must have walked with them to see them safe.  I heard this same story from
2 CONT Aunt Dude (Eula).  But at this moment I don't have his name.  (By the way,
2 CONT that is a long walk.)

2 CONT  Willie Tyler Dawson Hight is buried in Meadow Ridge Memorial Park, , 7250

2 CONT After she and Clifford Dawson parted ways,.  She also worked packing cantalopes. 
2 CONT details.  She then went back to finish her education and became a teacher.
2 CONT At times she was going to school the same as my mom, her daughter, since
2 CONT Laura sort of raised them as siblings.  I will get details of the missing
2 CONT time, but starting in the late '40's she was teaching at Fountain Hights,
2 CONT and  Bryant Station, a school which was grade 1-12.  She was the Principal,
2 CONT teacher of grades 8-12, bus driver, and President of the PTA.  It was a two
2 CONT class-room school with lunch room and outhouse.  Angeline Brown was the
2 CONT other teacher.  I went there for First Grade.  In the mid-sixties,
2 CONT Grandmother went to summer school in Knoxville to get a college degree.
2 CONT When Bryant Station closed, she transferred to Riverside school in Columbia
2 CONT to teach 4th grade.  She was very proud of her degree.  Of all her stuff, I
2 CONT chose her class ring as a keepsake because it meant so much to her.  She was
2 CONT way ahead of the women's lib. movement because she held many leadership
2 CONT positions and there are official photos where she is the only woman in the
2 CONT group.  She was also in the B&PW club.  (business and professional womens).
2 CONT Her Christian faith was a big part of her life.  She had many Bibles and all
2 CONT of them show her marks and study aids.  When she was almost 70, the school
2 CONT district enforced the mandantory retirement schedule.  She came to Maryland
2 CONT to live with her daughter, my mom,Georgie.  Seavy Hight, who was 20 years
2 CONT her senior, was already living with Mom.  Mom cared for both of them till
2 CONT their deaths.  Seavy was in a nursing home 6 years and died in 1989, at 105,
2 CONT of heart failure during surgery.  Willie had declining memory for several
2 CONT years from about '87 until about '93, when Alzheimers was diagnosed.  She
2 CONT was in a nursing home for about 2 years, when the Alzheimers claimed her
2 CONT life in 1995.  Mom visited each of them every single day they were in the
2 CONT nursing home.  She took Pa his fried chicken and fried brains.  She took
2 CONT Grandmother her milkshakes, and kept her hair fixed nice.  They were not
2 CONT abandoned.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Until they moved to MD, they never left the house on the river, at the
2 CONT bridge on Seavy Hight Road.

2 CONT always dressed up .  I think she lived in Detroit.  I vaguely remember being

2 CONT Jim Tyler had appendicitis.  The doctors gave him the first appendicitis
2 CONT operation in the county.  It didn't go too well, and his stomach went
2 CONT rotten;  it smelled and swelled up.  The doctors didn't know what to do.
2 CONT The family stuck him in the basement because he smelled so bad.  Some people
2 CONT didn't like that , so they brought him up and started giving him home
2 CONT remedies like sulphur.  It eventually cured him.  (When telling you this
2 CONT story before I mentioned that Eula took a year off from school to care for
2 CONT him.)
2 CONT 
2 CONT When he healed, his stomach wall was very thin and all his innards sagged
2 CONT out the front.  Eventually Pa (Seavy) took him to Nashville for surgery to
2 CONT lap all the skin over and sew it.  In the end, Jim Tyler had a flat stomach.

2 CONT Jim Tyler, called Poppa by my Mom, was known as the handy man of Culleoka.
2 CONT He did gardening and odd jobs for people.  He spent time helping Pa (Seavy
2 CONT Hight) with the gardening and farm chores.  He often stayed at the house for

2 CONT Gardening was good for him.  He set out Pecan tree and big pear tree on the Holler property.

2 CONT They moved out of the Covey Holler when Brother was 3 years old, about 1920.  They moved int

2 CONT in with Momma in Cully.
2 CONT After the Seavy Hight marriage, Mom, Willie and Seavy moved into the big
2 CONT house on road that is now Seavy Hight Road, next to the creek.  Every
2 CONT weekend Mom would go back (usually ride her pony) to stay with Laura for the
2 CONT weekend.  Every Sunday at 3pm, Laura would start to cry because Mom had to
2 CONT leave at 4pm.  Laura was miserable without my Mom.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Laura was sick a lot.  She had epilepsy and other troubles. They hardly ever saw Momma smile
2 CONC .  Near the end
2 CONT she didn't eat much but when she did eat, it was too much, like a whole
2 CONT stick of butter.  The last few months she moved down to the house on the
2 CONT creek with Willie and Seavy.  It was there she died, with Mom holding her
2 CONT down from one of her attacks.  Mom said, "I didn't know what to do, everybody ran."  Grandmot
2 CONC her, and Dude and Gladys ran out in the yard screaming and holding their heads with their han
2 CONC ds.  Pa finally figured out what was happening and came down to help.  
2 CONT 
2 CONT After she died, they laid her out in the front room, because there were no funeral parlors i
2 CONC n those days.

2 CONT Jim Tyler, called Poppa by my Mom, was known as the handy man of Culleoka.
2 CONT He did gardening and odd jobs for people.  He spent time helping Pa (Seavy
2 CONT Hight) with the gardening and farm chores.  He often stayed at the house for
2 CONT months at a time.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Jim Tyler had appendicitis.  The doctors gave him the first appendicitis
2 CONT operation in the county.  It didn't go too well, and his stomach went
2 CONT rotten;  it smelled and swelled up.  The doctors didn't know what to do.
2 CONT The family stuck him in the basement because he smelled so bad.  Some people
2 CONT didn't like that , so they brought him up and started giving him home
2 CONT remedies like sulphur.  It eventually cured him.  (When telling you this
2 CONT story before I mentioned that Eula took a year off from school to care for
2 CONT him.)
2 CONT 
2 CONT When he healed, his stomach wall was very thin and all his innards sagged
2 CONT out the front.  Eventually Pa (Seavy) took him to Nashville for surgery to
2 CONT lap all the skin over and sew it.  In the end, Jim Tyler had a flat stomach.

2 CONT It was while living at the white house in Cully that Laura's son James
2 CONT (Sonny, Sally) took on the name Sally.  The family didn't have much of
2 CONT anything, so they made up their own fun.  James liked to dress up in his
2 CONT sister's clothes for fun, and because he didn't have much for clothes or
2 CONT entertainment. One of his tricks was to dress in the girls clothes and sit
2 CONT on the fence to wait for the postman.  Postman would tease him, saying "If
2 CONT you don't quit wearing a dress I am going to call you Sally."  The name just
2 CONT stuck.

2 CONT (Mom speaks often about being poor and having nothing.  It has shaped her
2 CONT lifestyle to this day, and also that of Gladys.  Those are stories for
2 CONT another day.)

2 CONT history in Tenn. that said Amos Sr. was a very strict man and said he would 
2 CONT disown any of his children that married before their 21st birthday.  Well 
2 CONT Amos Jr. b. 1829 and married Rebecca  February 14, 1848 would put him in 
2 CONT the one disowned.  That would be an awful thing to happen in the family, if 
2 CONT infact it did.  Amos Sr.'s other son:  Isaac Dawson (the one I descend 
2 CONT from) said the same thing to his children..My grandfather Thomas Jacob 
2 CONT Dawson married  a month after he turned 21 years old.   Mose Isaac Dawson, 
2 CONT brother to Thomas Jacob also married the year he turned 21....etc.  so the

2 CONT Here I lived in Bybee, TN and went to school with relatives that I knew 
2 CONT nothing about...and I'm finding a lot of people I knew  in the surrounding 
2 CONT counties was relation...!!!!   I'm just so glad Amos Dawson Jr. has been 
2 CONT found with lots of relatives that we can share stories.
2 CONT Isaac Dawson had four sons and they were always cutting up and playing 
2 CONT jokes on each other...Well, Drury's son's did too...There was Joe Dawson 
2 CONT the sheriff of Cocke Co. who met a train because there was a man aboard 
2 CONT causing a lot of trouble(drunk or something).  Anyway it was his brother 
2 CONT that he hadn't seen in years..( He was marching him to the jail, when he 
2 CONT said " you wouldn't do this to your brother would you?" and was he ever 
2 CONT surprised.

2 CONT  Charles D. Knight, a native of Giles Co., Tennessee, was born on Feb. 19, 1857, son of Andre
2 CONC w J. and Leathy L. Knight.  The father was born in Georgia, and at the age of 18 began farmin
2 CONC g for himself.  His first wife was Drucilla Hardy, who died a few years after marriage.  He t
2 CONC hen married our subject's mother, who bore him these children: Dewitt C., Martha J., Nancy M.
2 CONC , Mary, Charles D., W. M., Luby, Minnie, Ellen, and Andrew J.  The mother was a native of Gil
