FIRST RUN OF THE YEAR

Barking, howling, whining dogs,
Putting the dogs in the dog boxes can be quite a task.
Hitching, hooking to dogs to the gangline.

Pulling, tugging at the tuglines,
Jumping, wanting to go mushing.
Getting excited as every minute passes.

Running, getting tangled before you have not even gone thirty feet.
Leading, commanding, the lead dogs know the commands
As the other dogs follow.

Sitting, ducking, dodging the low branches.
Going over a rough trail can be rough on you and the sled.
Huffing, puffing, as the dogs run,
Snow kicking up behind the dogs which makes a cloud of white.

Resting, snacking, switching,
Coming back to the truck after the first run can be rewarding.
The dogs get a snack for a job well done.
You can stand up, stretch your legs and get ready for the next run.
