    BASICS

Nestled deep in the Chugach, Thompson Pass Mt. Chalet provides guided day trips into the Chugach. We specialize in small group, no impact skiing for the best touring and sometimes steepest runs around.  As a year-round operation, this keeps us in the snow from the first flakes in October, through the mega dumps of December and well into July in some summers.

When conditions allow there are excellent ski routes from the Chalet.  If not, its only 10 minutes to Thompson Pass and 30 minutes to the Valdez Arena trailheads.

If your just lodge and ski on your own, that's great. Matt will share you his best beta to get the untracked.

The Chalet has DSL/WIFI.

YOUR GUIDE

Matt Kinney is your guide. For nearly 30 years Matt has called Thompson Pass his "training ground". He has freeheeled his way across the Chugach twice.  Matt is well trained in avalanche awareness, providing daily avalanche and weather forecasting for the area sine 1996.  Matt recently updated his experience with 40hr Emergency Trauma Technician and CPR/1st Aid. He has averaged around 120 days a years skiing the area. This will give you the edge in Valdez when looking for the best, safest, and untracked.
He also operates the National Weather Service observer station as a volunteer, providing daily snow totals and weather for various entities in the area including the Alaska Department of Transportation, recreationalist skiers and other commercial ski operations.
Alaska Backcountry Skiing; Thompson Pass and Valdez,
released in 2006, continues to entertain backcountry skiers around the word with its innovative yet practical approach to skiing some of the steepest terrain in the Chugach

YOU AND GEAR

As backcountry skiers visiting the Chugach, we do not provide you ski gear. This is your responsibility,  including repair kits.  There is no where to rent gear in Valdez. Each skier must provide their own beacon, probe and shovel. We also request skier bring helmets for most skiing.  The Chalet does not provide meals for the trail as we feel you best know your calorie needs. Skier are expected to be intermediate rated or better and in fit condition for the the weather and skiing in the Chugach Range of Alaska. If you have questions about gear feel free to give us a call or e-mail.

We are non-denominational, thus spend snow time with all disciplines, Telemark, Alpine Touring and Snowboard.

SKIING

Day trips typically depart at 8:30 am after a safety meeting and trip planning.  Most day trip last 6 hours or more depending on a variety factors.   If weather is poor for backcountry skiing, low angled touring to canyons and icefall will keep you on your skiis.
The Chalet is within minutes of abundant icefalls for those who bring ice-climbing gear.  All guided guest will be required to sign a Waiver of Liability prior to a ski trip with the Chalet.

Some of the best skiers in the world have stayed and      skied from the Chalet.  Our private, exclusive guide service and lodging promises you the best of the snowy Chugach with an experienced guide in Valdezean,  Matt Kinney.

Backcountry skiing is the fastest growing segment of the ski industry for good reason.  Its good for your health and its good for the environment.   Hopefully you and your friends  will come and experience the best in Alaska's winter recreation.
