You might consider strongly supporting
the Sep. 14th ballot ref. to use part of the perm fund to support goverment.
If this doesn't pass we
will be much more likely to
be forced into org. into a borough as the State starts to run out of money.
If you are one of the misled folks
who think that an income tax
will be paid by the rich, ask yourself the following:
You just won the lottery and
are super filthy rich. An income tax has been implemented in Alaska
and you have two choices. 1. Pay tens of
thousands of dollars each
year in income taxes out of the goodness of your heart. or 2. hop on the
next flight to Seattle, go to their DMV,
get a WA drivers license,
transfer your funds into a WA bank and claim yourself a WA resident.
Now if you picked number 2, don't worry because you can still visit/live
in Alaska as long as you want, as a glorified tourist.
But it won't stop there!
Thousands of retirees, living on a fixed income will move. Thousands
more will max out deferred income accounts
provided by their employeers.
Each person is entitled to defer approx. $10,000 per year. All income
from Native Corp. will also be tax free
under State and Federal law.
As far as the out of State folks paying part of this tax, this is too few
to even mention, their share will be
insignificant. Most of these
people are seasonal workers, working in cannerys, driving buses, etc, and
they don't make much to tax.
The bottom line is that people
will avoid and fight this tax and with every person who does so, the rest
of us will have to "contribute" an
ever increasing share.
The rate being mulled over is between 9%-26% according to who you talk
to, but the one thing everyone is sure on is that it will be the highest
in the nation. Did I mention that 600 new State workers will have
to be hired to manage an income tax?
Think for yourself and vote Sep.
14th, and for those who will cut the budget.

6/9/98 It's down to "do
or die" here, guys. The state is; according to the way they're pushing
their views down our throats, that the lifestyle that built the United
States is no longer viable.
If we are
to become a borough we'd better do it soon, and before it is mandated by
Juneau. The boundaries have already been drawn that will split our region
into three parts: 1 to go to Valdez with their 20 mil rate, 1 to North
Star with their 21 mils, and the 3rd to Mat Su with their 18 1/2. If we
form our own and claim the $17 million per year (for 7 years) to "organize
and establish ourselves" we can go at most 4 years with no taxes,
then a minimum of 3mils. The problem is that with our highly paid teachers
and board members; the greed of the likeliest candidates for Mayor (or
Manager) the minimum cost to support JUST the school district is $16,000
per year "per person".
Ain't no
way unless we can fire everybody and start over.
