Why a Child?

Conceived in a moment of touching and feeling,
Carried through nine months of doubt, worry, and joy,
Born amidst a flurry of emotions and pain;
Some may ask 'Why?'
They do not remember the smile of an infant.
They haven't seen a baby's first steps,
Or heard a baby's first word.
Little compares to the trust a child gives,
Or the pride one feels when a child succeeds at a difficult task.
There is joy as a child learns and grows.
There is love which the child returns.
That is why parent's wake in the night to comfort a child's cries;
Why parent's worry when a child is ill or is hurt;
Why parent's pace when their child is out late and forgot to call;
And why parent's endure heartache, worry, and doubt.
All for the joy from the love of a child.
