Drive from Anchorage to Ninilchik

Alaska Highways in Summer

Click for Map

It is an easy 4 hour
scenic 180 mile paved road drive
from Anchorage to Ninilchik,
but make it a more leisurely trip
and enjoy the many things to see and do.

Follow the Alaska Route 1 Freeway
(New Seward Highway) out of Anchorage,
along the Turnagain Arm salt water tidal mud flats.
Look for the rugged wet-suited wind surfers
and the schools of white Beluga whales
at the many turnout parking areas.
Enjoy the twice a day 30+ foot tidal changes.

See the Alyeska Resort and Ski Area
with the majestic 14 story Prince Hotel
and Aerial Tram
near Girdwood.

Then on to view glacier streams
with spawning salmon
and the icebergs at the free Portage Glacier Visitor Center.
There is an Alaskan Wild Animal Park at Portage too.

Route 1 continues
and soon leaves sea level
and as a 4 lane divided highway,
climbs easily over 3000 foot Turnagain Pass.

Drive Carefully - Hitting one of our many Moose is not good......... Be alert - - - -There are always Moose on our highways.

Watch out for Moose, Dall Sheep and other animals
on the surrounding mountain slopes
and in the broad open alpine tundra meadows
along the highway.

Approaching Tern Lake,
Route 1 turns right (South)
and leaves the Seward Highway
(which now becomes Alaska Route 9).

Now you are on the Sterling Highway
(it is still Alaska Route 1)
heading into the Kenai Peninsula.
Continue on through Cooper Landing,
and then the highway follows
the blue-green waters of the Kenai River.
Drive on, out of the mountains
and then continue on
4 lane divided pavement through Sterling
and then on into Soldatna,
into the heart of the Kenai Peninsula.

Now, you will again cross over the powerfull Kenai River,
with its world class King Salmon fishing reputation,
and then cross the Kasolof River.

At this point the Route 1 highway follows closely
along the Cook Inlet bluffs.
On a clear day, look out to the West
over the 40 mile wide Cook Inlet
to see the four snow covered volcanoes
or for pictures, click a Volcano named below:

Augustine Illiamna Redoubt Mount Spurr

Continue on through Clam Gulch, and there you are, at Ninilchik.

Here is a map of Ninilchik, Alaska.

<<<<<<------ Cook Inlet is over there on the West

It is 1/4 mile West from the Sterling Highway to
The Bluff House Bed & Breakfast.

Headed South,
and at the South end of town,
opposite the Kenai Peninsula State Fair grounds,
turn right (West towards Cook Inlet) off the highway
onto the gravel road "Julia Steik Avenue",

up the hill,
