Welcome to the Astronomy Telescope Viewing Schedule
Information Page.
When telescope "seeing conditions" and other
weather conditions are favorable, we will be scheduling
periodic telescope parties in the evenings for Service High School
students, their friends and family. However, since cloud conditions
are notoriously unpredictable in Anchorage I (teacher Mr. Bjarne
Holm) will either confirm or cancel the telescope party no later than
6 PM in the late afternoon. You are therefore encouraged to check
this web page before you bundle up to go out to star, planet, or
other night sky object searching with us.
LOCATION: "Upper Huffman" parking lot. Head
up Upper Huffman from Hillside Drive. Part way up the hill the road
will divide into several forks. Stay on the main fork, which now
becomes named Sultana, (make sure you do not head up Toilsome Road to
Glenn Alps). The telescope will be set up in the parking lot at the
end of the road. This parking lot is used as a staging area for snow
machines, when enough snow is present (not the case
currently).
TIME: 7-8 PM
Tuesday, February 6, 2001: Sorry, we have about a 97%
cloud cover tonight. The next scheduled try will be in two days on
the 8th.
Thursday, February 8, 2001: Cloudy again, so no viewing tonight.
Unfortunately last night, when the viewing was spectacular, I had to
be at a meeting. The next viewing attempt will be tomorrow
night.
Friday, February 9, 2001: This may be our lucky evening, so
I'll be there tonight. At 5PM virtually all of the "cloud cover" you
may be seeing from lower elevations is
below our viewing area.
The viewing should be spectacular. Please remember to dress warmly,
and approach the viewing area with parking lights only. Bright lights
desensitizes eyes that have adapted to the dark.
The viewing was
spectacular.
Tuesday, March 13, 2001: We had a beautiful day while at
school today. However, mother nature is not cooperating this
evening, since clouds are rolling in. Unfortunately we'll have to
cancel tonight.
Cheers Bjarne Holm
